How I Met Your Mother – Ted finds his picket fence

Kids, just remember if you ever do have a nude painting of yourself done, make sure the guitar really is present.

- Season 5, Episode 20 - "Home Wreckers"

Ted Mosby has got to have about the worst luck in life. He’s got this dream in mind of what his life is supposed to be, and he just can’t seem to get there. He’s got a great life, all things considered, but he isn’t content and wants to start that next chapter. Tonight, he tried to skip the show’s titular first step and go straight to buying a home. I’ve got to tell you, if the show was called How I Bought our House, it would belong on TLC and not CBS.

I know it’s a cliché, but Ted’s not going to start the next phase of his life until he stops trying to start the next phase of his life. I personally think we’re due to finally meet the mother this season, but I hope it’s something that jumps out at Ted instead of someone he was looking for. I’m not sure that, after all the build up, there’s any “Mother” that will make fans happy. I’ll just be happy to finally put that question to rest. Until then, let’s just hope we don’t have an episode where another character (or characters) find their new house. Or apartment in “Dowisetrepla.”

I’m not sure this has ever been said about writers Bays & Thomas, but I don’t think they milked the “Drunk or Kid” bit enough. I know Marshall has done some dumb stuff over the years, but I’d love to see the rest of the gang chime in. Though I doubt it, I hope they bring this gag back. Robin and Lily would be great candidates. Just saying.

The Robin/Barney storyline was good stuff, and I’m glad that they can put these two together without it all being about their failed relationship. Barney’s storytelling, at least trying to get out of catching hell, was worth it just to hear Cristine Rose and Cobie Smulders say … that line.

Though, I guess the real mystery of tonight’s episode was why the hell Barney cried at the wedding?

Notes & Quotes

  • Love watching Rose’s guest spots on HIMYM, as the character is so different from her role on Heroes.
  • “Kids … there was no guitar.” – Ted
  • “Best.” – Robin
    “Wedding.” – Marshall
    “Ev….” – Lily
    “…ER!” – Barney
  • OK, now I really want to play “Drunk or Kid” with all my friends.
  • “But the bright side? The pond in your basement is drowning some of the larger, slower rats. The rest of them? Well, they’re headed this way.” – Inspector
  • “Ted, as you know, I’ve always been very, very fond of your mother.” – Barney
  • “Come on dude, your mom is a cougar.” – Barney
“Wait, I thought you said a cougar can’t be over 50.” – Robin
    “OK, she’s a Mellencamp.” – Barney
  • The transformation into Old Ted’s house was telegraphed, but still done well.
  • The IMDb page for tonight’s episode was a disappointment, because it lead me to believe we’d see the trailer for The Wedding Bride.
  • When did HIMYM stop doing coda’s prior to the credits?

Wait, I thought Barney said the real reason he cried was because he was sad that Ted’s mother got away…?

OK, let’s start playing “Drunk or Kid” here, now: I once put the live end of an extension cord on my tongue to see if it was live. It was. Drunk or kid?

And then Virginia talked about the size of Barney’s member, leading me to doubt the whole story. But I wasn’t sure?

And, I’m gonna go with …………… Drunk.

See, all of my stories would be Kid, because I can’t remember any of my good Drunk stories :)

No, I was a kid. Saw an extension cord hanging from the ceiling, thought I’d see what would happen if I stuck it on my tongue. Explains a lot about me, doesn’t it?

“Drunk or Kid” was the best part of the show, though I admit to cocking an eyebrow at the driving one.

Ted was, as usual, just not interesting or funny. Not enough backlash for walking out of his mom’s wedding because he was moping yet again about not having finished his life plan already. I’m almost as obsessive about it as Ted is now. Just so we can move on already. Give him his damn wife and kid in the next episode and let’s get back to “Drunk or Kid”, Barney, Robin and Lily.

Ted walked out of his mom’s wedding? That’s horrible, yet unsurprising; it just seems like such a Ted thing to do.

what does coda mean?

April 21, 2010 at 8:34 PM

Bleen, sorry for not answering this sooner. When you think coda, think of the scene with Samuel L. Jackson at the end of the first Iron Man movie. HIMYM used to always have a last, minute or two long scene after the last commercial break, but before the credits. Like in “Slap Bet” when we came back and saw the whole “Let’s Go to the Mall” music video.
