Is The Good Wife getting even better?

'The Good Wife' has been great all season, but with the addition of Eli Gold, I feel like a whole new dimension has been added to the show. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that Alan Cumming has been promoted to a series regular!

The Good Wife has become my favorite new drama of the season. Julianna Margulies kicks the crap out of the role of Alicia Florrick, already winning a slew of awards for her performance. While Margulies carries the show, she is hardly the only good thing about it. The writing and the characters are very strong and the weekly cases are interesting and varied, and there’s enough continuing plot to reward the loyal viewers.

Recently, the show has taken an interesting turn, with Alicia’s cheating, disgraced husband returning home as he faces a retrial for his crimes. This has added a whole new dimension to the show, with Chris Noth’s Peter interacting with his children, plotting his political return, and trying to figure out where he and Alicia stand. As if that weren’t enough, as part of Peter’s return to politics a new character was introduced: Eli Gold, played by Alan Cumming. Gold is tasked with rebuilding Peter’s image and getting his campaign going. Aryeh may not like the character, but I’ve loved him so far.

If you’re like me, then I have great news: Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly reported this week that Alan Cumming is being upgraded to series regular for the second season of the show. I find it a little curious, because even Noth is not technically a series regular, although that could change before the second season begins. I’m still excited, though. I think Cumming adds a fun vibe to the show and his character has an enjoyable rapport with Alicia. It’s going to be fun watching the two of them spar for an entire season, as well as the rest of this one.

I think this news also indicates that things are going to go well for Peter and his trial, though perhaps not his public image. If we are going to have a whole season of political plotting and image maintenance, then I have to figure that Peter is going to remain out of prison. Perhaps the show is just going to drag out the appeals case for a long time, which would be fine as well, but I’m happy that Peter and Alicia are going to have more time together. I’m excited to see where this fascinating show is going to go. How about you?
