New Girl – Have Schmidt and Cece been found out?

"Fancyman Pt. 2" leads us by the hand to some uncomfortable and awkward conclusions, but satisfyingly so.

- Season 1, Episode 18 - "Fancyman Pt. 2"

Maybe Winston’s right. Perhaps the rules of the universe have been tossed out the window with the discovery of Schmidt and Cece sleeping together. I mean, after all:

  • That’s not only one heck of a discovery, it’s aone big ‘ole elephant as you walk in the room, completely capable of spinning anyone’s head with a ton of questions. Plus …
  • Jess is trying to be a sophisticate (that ain’t workin’, though) and …
  • Schmidt is actually spurning Cece’s advances, an interesting dynamic to his character.

Is that all I’ve got to go on? All the “proof” I have about the universe being topsy-turvy? Because there still are the constants of:

  • Nick being Nick. He was impressed by Russell’s wealth and stature last week and now he’s all about being impressive to college-aged girls … so Nick’s being Nick, so to speak. He does have the tendency to get caught up in whichever way the wind blows.
  • Winston’s juggling of Shelby back and forth, trying to please her in his wishy-washy manner, but still retaining his rock-solids status when it comes to his roommates. That’s been a given with him.

So maybe things are balanced after all and I’m just going off on a tangent. But … I’m not going off on a tangent. This is the world we live in with New Girl. The “frantickness” of everyones’ situations still play out to comical consequence (and to our benefit) and (usually) come to a resolute conclusion, crazy as that seems. Plus, it appears this episode was a neat little wrap up to “Fancyman Pt. 1″ last week. (I mean … this is “Part 2″ of the arc, you know.)

Notes:

  • Dinner with Russell and Jess was awkward and uncomfortable even for me. Jess’ jibber jabber didn’t leave me feeling the writers knew what to do with her in that situation and the entire scene fell flat.
  • Additionally, Jess’ appearance at the loft “after party” felt forced, as if there had to be something for her to do. Of course … there had to be, but the result didn’t work. Between her whiny-ness and being crowned the “flip cup queen” just didn’t mesh.
  • Nick, my favorite character of the group, is starting to bother me. He’s impressed with Russell one moment, he’s drunk and incoherent the next. He’s a hero in Jess’ eyes with profound advice in the morning, he’s being juvenile when it comes to girls at night. He’s enamored with the plushness of a sweater last week, this week he’s got puppy dog eyes for his deadbeat buddy Dirk. I don’t know whether to love the guy or slap him up alongside his head and tell him to get with the program.
  • As much as “Fancyman Pt. 2″ wrapped things up, it left some nice little questions in need of resolution: How did Winston, Schmidt and Cece get out of their Mexican border debacle? (I have doubts the latter two had any identification on them.) And speaking of Schmidt and Cece, we’ll certainly discover the consequences of their discovery in the cargo section of Schmidt’s car next episode. That should be fun! Will the relationship with Jess and Russell continue? Because there is absolutely zero electricity between the two. You could feel the uncomfortability in Dermot Mulroney as he tried to play out that final scene with Zooey Deschanel. Awkward to the third degree.
  • I wasn’t impressed with Nick (Thomas Lennon , Reno 911!). Smarmy and throwaway.
  • Alert the media! I just have to say it again: Schmidt and Cece are caught! Interesting back and forth will result!

Quotes:

“Your house guest is urinating in the bathroom Tony the Tiger style.” — Jess to the gang after glimpsing Dirk peeing

“Hey … when’s the last time you had mono?” [Nick shrugs]
“Tomorrow you’re going to say ‘Yesterday’ …” — Dirk to Nick as he plants seeds about picking up college girls

“How’s your prostate? I had my breast exam last weekend. Like … they’re fine. It’s just boob in there, but … we have to be careful. Our bodies are decaying …” — Jess to Russell over dinner (because prostates and breast exams make excellent dinner conversation)

“I’ve never jumped out of a moving car before! That was badass!” — Nick, drunk, jumping out of Russell’s parked car
