NCIS – It was all about the inheritance?

Talk about an attention grabbing way to open an episode! Last night’s NCIS gave us, and a pair of burglars, a nice scare when a hanging body fell from nowhere into the entryway. I actually think it showed a bit of restraint that the burglars only popped off two shots at the body. Talk about frightening!

I enjoyed the little sideshow about McGee making $253 more per week than Tony does. Although at first it did sound like it had to do with withholding and net pay (as opposed to gross), in the end it turned out that Tony was right. Great reappearance by NCIS Cashier Fred Seymour (Samm Levine) … and my condolences to Tony for discovering that he owes three thousand dollars in back FICA withholding.

And I enjoyed how that story actually brought Dr. Samantha Ryan (Jamie Lee Curtis), of PsyOps and not of the accounting department, into the picture. How Tony confused her for someone who works with Fred I don’t know, but their conversation about feelings and fathers was great.

The case was somewhat interesting this time around, but I was not a fan of Dr. Ryan. I’m not sure if it was my confusion over Jamie Lee Curtis taking a gig on NCIS, or if it was simply her character’s wholly unlikable nature (thinking about it now it was probably the latter), but I found her taking me out of whatever scenes she was in.

Fortunately for us we did get a fair amount of time without her. Some of the best were Gibbs ripping wires out of monitors in the office, McGee bemoaning Gibbs’ request to get everything on paper from the source (and then the sight of the records room that needed to be searched), and our thinking that Gibbs found the pill and was no sucker, until Abby revealed that there were pills under all three (he’s probably still no sucker, however).

And, as much as I obviously feel for someone who had to suffer as a result of this, the Internet misinformation thing sounds brilliant. It’s annoying enough when you get a computer virus that reroutes your Google search results to sites you weren’t looking to visit; imagine if your search results seemed genuine but actually provided you with misinformation, like fake sports scores and made-up news stories. I’d have to think it would be easy enough to discover that — wouldn’t early detection of the problem blunt its effect? — but I could still see how it could be maddening to be living in a world of creation and then abruptly crash into reality on a daily basis.

But I think it was the sideshow of Curtis — and the reappearance of Cate’s sister, Dr. Rachel Cranston (Wendy Makkena) — that was intended to be the main focus of this episode. At least that’s how it would seem given the completely inorganic way that, by the end, Ryan was asking Gibbs out on a date. Please let her not be a recurring character, and especially not one who Gibbs dates. Aside from them making no sense together, would Gibbs really date someone who lied to him and bugged his house?

Not the Gibbs that you and I know.
