Brenda Leigh Johnson has been in some serious denial. Not only is she in denial about the specific fact that she essentially had someone killed, but she has been in major denial that this could in any way have a negative outcome. It seemed that after Captain Raydor took her to the crime scene last week, she had finally started to get it. Clearly, however, that was not the case.
We find out this week that Brenda hasn’t yet bothered to hire a lawyer for herself. This is problematic, considering that she, along with the rest of her squad is being named in a wrongful death lawsuit. Well, everyone except for Gabriel. It was a great tactic on the lawyer’s part to cause divisiveness in the team by making it seem like one guy snitched. They left poor Gabriel out there, defenseless, not unlike Turrell was.
Of course, things worked out a lot better for Gabriel, since Brenda didn’t allow the squad to turn on him and he eventually became a named defendant in the suit. For better or worse, Brenda’s the matriarch of this family, and when she finally realized that they weren’t just going after her, but that they would hurt everyone she cares about (and Commander Taylor), Brenda had the breakthrough that she’s been needing to have all season.
It helps that the case they were working on was a shining example of how an entire family could swiftly be brought down by trying to cover up the misdeeds of one of its members. The preacher’s son killed him, but the entire family worked together to make sure that everything would be covered up. In the end though, it didn’t work. Not only did the person responsible go down, but everyone else went down with him.
There was a lot of talk about honor in this episode. The wife tried to protect her husband’s honor by covering up his predilections, the son “did the honorable thing” by coming clean. Brenda’s finally realizing that there’s no honor in sticking her head in the sand, in letting her family potentially be hurt by her actions. She seems to have come to a turning point; let’s see where it leads us.
