America’s Got Talent – The final round of auditions

It's the last day of 'America's Got Talent' audition and many contestants hope to get a ticket to Vegas. The final acts delivered in sublime, wacky, crazy, and plain stupid ("What's the opposite of an X?")

America's Got Talent

Some of the acts not going through:

  • 61-year-old James David Pitts, aka King Diamond, was ready to entertain the world as he stepped on stage. The singer failed to impress the crowd and judges as he was quite off key during his performance. He got Xed by the three judges. The best part of King Diamond’s audition was when Nick joined him on stage and their performed the audition together. Nick’s silliness made this second performance fun to watch but it didn’t help King Diamond get votes to go to Vegas.
  • Morton Hyson tried to wow us will his opera singing and, especially, with his extremely low notes. Not only was his singing really badly but his eyes and mouth moved in a way that was just plain scary.
  • 55-year-old Marivana did not shine during her audition as her singing was, well, not singing. Not only that but, after being Xed by the three judges, she asked “What is the opposite of an X?”

The Worst of the Worst: Manchego (see the picture above) wins the “worst of the worst” title for this episode. Not only was his performance lacking any type of talent but it was not entertaining and was a tad creepy. Putting on tons of underwear and removing them on stage is not talent. He did get his 90 seconds of fame though. I was surprised that only Piers Xed Manchego but maybe the other two judges were just shocked and curious to see what how low he would go. Luckily for the viewers, we didn’t get to see Manchego without any underwear as it was implied the audience and judges did.

Some of the acts going through:

  • Kevin Shelley went as far as bleeding for his art! This 45-year-old broke 40 white pine boards with his … forehead!!! What was even more impressive was the speed at which he broke each board. CRAZY! Howie was a bit freaked out by the blood and screamed “ER! ER! ER!” instead of “VEGAS!” This is not surprising considering that Howie is a germaphobe. Sharon voted no as she didn’t believe this act could headline a show in Vegas. But Howie and Piers voted yes so Kevin got his ticket to the next round.
  • Dezmond Meeks offered a soulful performance that was a combination of Prince and Little Richie.
  • Thomas John performed a unique juggling act where he threw balls out of his mouth up in the air so that they hit certain notes on a toy xylophone in order to play “Oh When the Saints.” His spot-on performance awarded him a spot in the next round.
  • 4Play, four women, wowed the crowd with their great vocals and fantastic back vocals.
  • J. Chris Newberg is a comedian that sings his jokes. Personally, I didn’t laugh once during his audition and do not see why he deserved to go to Vegas.

The “I Can’t Believe this Act is Going to Vegas” act: The “Meet Me At Fairfax and 3rd” act was bad. The singing was not good and the guy doing some leg stretching upside-down on the chair was not talent. Yes, seeing old folks perform such an act can be fun but what they offered us was nowhere near good enough for Vegas. Despite what I think, the act got a good number of laughs from the crowd. The judges, who admitted the performance was horrible, said yes to Vegas as they were entertained. I don’t get this decision. Piers said he didn’t know what to think as it was a ludicrous act even if entertaining. Howie even went as far as saying that it was an act made of two “nothings” but then said that the combination of nothing made, well, something… I don’t agree; the two “nothings” made an overall “nothing.” Let’s hope they don’t get a spot in the Top 48.

The Show Stealers: Again this week, kids stole the show! This time, it was Avery and the Calico Hearts. These three young singers won the crowd and viewers even before starting to sing with their attitude, their big smile and the “Piers scares me” admission from one of them. Young Avery is the lead singer while the other two ladies do back vocals. Avery not only owned the stage but her voice was quite impressive, even though not fully matured (Howie referred to their singing as “a record one speed too fast”). The backup singers have very good voices too and the mesh of all their voices together worked really well. Piers voted no as he didn’t think that this was the right year for them compared to the other singers. To this, I tell Piers that you voted for the “Meet Me At Fairfax and 3rd” act, you have to let Avery and the Calico Hearts go through as well. Thankfully, Sharon and Howie said yes to the young trio.

The Best of the Best: Despite one mistake (one of the tumblers accidentally hit another member of the team and both fell down), Chicago’s Ultimate Tumblers rocked the house! We’ve seen tumblers in previous episodes but none were as impressive as the CUT tumblers as they raised the bar by using a trampoline to jump and tumble even higher and even had to jump over a human pyramid. I was surprised that Piers didn’t X them when one of the tumblers hit the young woman as he usually Xes acts when there is an error (like a juggler dropping a prop on the floor).
