Bob’s Burgers – 22 minutes of hot mess

In the annals of prime time cartoon animation, this episode of 'Bob's Burgers' was downright freaky. It was a disorderly and muddled affair ... but there were moments.

- Season 1, Episode 6 - "Sheesh Cab Bob"

Wow.

Where to begin with this episode of Bob’s Burgers? (Begin? Cripes … where do you even go with it?) Because, honestly, even I’m not exactly certain how to describe it.

It was a farrago of stories and images. If this was your first venture into the show, you were hit with more than you bargained for. Way, way more. It had to have been overwhelming. Instead of trying to encapsulate it, take a gander at the goings on for yourself.

Wacky and wild as it was, however, the bottom line of “Sheesh! Cab, Bob?” was this: To the last, the entire Belcher clan is a caring bunch. It might take you the entire episode to come ’round to this realization, but that’s the fact of the matter. And the most startling thing?  Gene and Louise appear to be the most empathetic members of the family:

  • Gene dedicates a song to Tina during her birthday party: “This one goes out to the birthday girl … pardon me … Birthday Woman.” Not many brothers are willing to do that without pulling some sort of stunt. Rather sweet.
  • And Louise? See for yourself below. That isn’t a slap of anger she smacks Gene with; it’s a “What’s the matter with you? Are you crazy?!?” with good sisterly intentions slap:

These two moments were the easily understandable portions of the episode. Packed elsewhere in the 22 minutes were a trio of transvestite hookers, a drunk and possibly crack-addled Bob and Gene passing fog machine gas. And more.

The key plot point was Tina’s first kiss … complete with the mystery skating underwear man guarding the clouds as Cupid, winged love zombies and The Thompson Twins “If You Were Here” playing in the background. (Yes … the same love song featured in the iconic John Hughes film Sixteen Candles.)

And did you hear the tune playing when Bob was cabbying? “Lifting up the skirt of the night … look down, feel ’round, do what I do to get by …”

Surreal episode.

Gotta run over to Fox and watch it now. I wonder what the writers are on, surely not Rolling Rock!

I don’t know about you, but I LOVED this episode. Did you notice that The Office’s Oscar Nunez and 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer were two of the trannies? And Dave Herman was Marshmallow!
