How I Met Your Mother – A heart skips a beat

Did 'How I Met Your Mother' just find a way to make Barney a sympathetic character? If not, this episode was for the dogs!

- Season 6, Episode 18 - "A Change of Heart"

Who would have thought. … After having Lily break our hearts with her face, and broken again and again as Marshall came to grips with his father’s passing, How I Met Your Mother would take another swing at making its audience sad so soon. And how? Did anyone ever think that we would see Barney in such a state?

Sure, he’s pined for Robin. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he was in the hospital; but this is different. Barney is, in a surprising number of ways, growing up. He’s finally really looking for his father (a storyline that, back-burned, will be returning sooner rather than later). Would anyone have expected to see Barney in a doctor’s office getting checked up? And now, Nora …

I actually believed for a quick second that he’d actually walked in and told her how he felt. There’s a running theory (Not mine; after getting slapped on the nose with a roll of newspaper with last week’s Zoey revelation, I’m done predicting for a while) that the wedding featured in the season premiere is actually Barney and Nora’s. That, crazily enough, actually makes some sense, especially with Ted as Best Man, and everyone else in their particular roles. If that were the case, Barney should have manned up. Instead, he stood like a dog with his nose pressed against the window.

See, even I couldn’t stay away from the fun of dog jokes. Robin’s new beau was the butt of too many to count in this episode. Considering Robin’s affinity to dogs (I still miss the five she gave up before), it shouldn’t be surprising that she’d pick up a stray. The dialogue run calling Scooby out was too good to actually transcribe the whole thing, so I’ll just hit the highlights:

Scooby Dogerisms:

  • Fetched the shots
  • Scoobie, sit
  • Properly vet-ted
  • Giving him pause
  • Telling the tail
  • Whisk her off her feet
  • Shedding light on the matter
  • Sending an email, or did he call her
  • Stop pounding him
  • Didn’t want to “flea”
  • Not a heel
  • Rough transition
  • It was an Incredible Journey
  • Speak
  • From Labrador
  • Loves a good walk
  • Stay

Notes & Quotes

  • “I only have one rule….” – Barney
  • “Nothing … is going to stand in the way of tonight being legend … wait for it … kachoooo! ….Uh oh.” – Barney
  • “Oh, Robin. If you weren’t so much stronger than me, I’d slap you.” – Marshall
  • “So um, I made an appointment with that cardiologist.” – Barney
“Oh, do you want me to go with you because you’re a little scared?” – Lily
    “Psh … No!” – Barney
“Do you want me to go with you because you’re a lot scared?” – Lily
    “YES!!!” – Barney
  • “And that explains your 14-second cardiac arrest.” – Doctor
  • You know, I’ve never had a sandwich before … Not even with bacon.
  • “If you eat a healthy diet, you could live a long and happy life … if nobody stabs you.” – Doctor
“Day’s not over yet.” – Lily
  • How did I not see Scoobie Snacks coming a mile away?

A good friend just Tweeted this, and it is a really good point:

“Awww dang…that last scene gave me chills. Would have been too easy though. Barney has to earn it. ”

Did anyone else think that the “heart actually skipped a beat” thing was kinda lame?

The whole Episode was kinda lame …

Extremely. I laughed out loud at that part. And not in a good way. It really undercut what came after it.

Was it just me, or did Nora seem like the perfect girl for Ted?

Oh, that would be a nice swerve. If only Ted hadn’t been at the table when she was introduced to the group.

As much as I appreciate the show trying to have Barney grow up…I don’t want him to grow up too much. I like player-Barney, not in-a-relationship Barney.

I really don’t like Nora’s character and it’s just annoying to me how they forcing Barney into this “love relationship” in 2 episodes after he spent almost a whole season pining for Robin.
