Saturday Night Live – Gwyneth Paltrow / Cee Lo Green

Coming attractions at the Globe Theatre, Pee-wee and Andy do shots, and Ceel Lo sings 'Forget You.' It's another episode of 'SNL,' and we'll have the videos here when they're released!

- Season 36, Episode 12 - "Gwyneth Paltrow / Cee Lo Green"

Cold Open: FOX News — I dunno why I just love Bill Hader‘s James Carville. I think it’s because every time I see Carville, dammit if that’s not how he acts! I mean — for crying out loud — he voices children’s audiobooks!

Monologue: Gwyneth Paltrow — Well for those hoping for a Paltrow/Green duet, you sorta got it here. Other than that, was just an OK monologue.

The Cape parodies — Gotta love it when one NBC show makes fun of another NBC show. Nothing is safe! My favorite on this sketch: The Leg Warmer. “Kicking crime’s ass with a warmed-up calf!”

Secret Word — Meh, I’m getting a little tired of Wiig’s character on this. I knew we were going to get more of it as soon as I saw what sketch it was, and Paltrow’s character did little to liven it up.

Andy and Pee-Wee Intervention — Short but pretty awesome. Plus, well, it is a digital “short,” so can’t fault it for that; and, Holy crap, Paul Reubens looks as young as he did the last time we saw him as Pee-wee many years ago (or at least the last time I saw him as Pee-wee). I hear he’s making a comeback too. Loved Chairy telling Anderson Cooper to get the fuck off of her.

Rockin’ Bar-mitzvah — Some clever lyrics in there, and the closest we’ll get to Cee Lo’s “Fuck You” song.

Forget You, FCC — Really a clever way to tell off the FCC with a sketch and work right into the first Cee Lo Green number …

Musical Guest: Cee Lo Green — … where they, in fact, did change the lyrics to “Fuck You” to be “Forget You.” Still sounded great, but I’m sure there are plenty of people out there all pissy that it had to be watered down, even at this late hour. It is pretty stupid, isn’t it? I do wonder if there was ever any real discussion with the FCC about whether they could make an exception tonight. In case you’re wondering, these are the same lyrics used in the Glee episode where Paltrow sang Green’s song. Oh, and in case you’re wondering (like I was) who the hot guitarist Cee Lo had on SNL is, she’s Sharon Aguilar.

Weekend Update — Really loved the “Constitution Corner” segment, and the Garth and Kat thing is juuuust slightly getting old, but I still love how they improv the “lyrics” to the songs and the other person has to try to keep up; it almost always leads to one of them cracking up.

Globe Theatre Previews — So I wonder if we’ll get more “False History” sketches in the future of if this is just another odd title that we never see again. I liked it! My favorite part was the announcement against recording the performance, and the painter got up and ran out.

Fresh Prince DVDs — It wasn’t a stretch to figure out that Jay Pharoah was going to do yet another of his overdone impressions. I’m not saying he can’t do them well, just that I hear them once and that’s enough.

SportsCenter Deportes — I thought for sure the sketch was going to eventually turn completely to English because the anchors simply couldn’t find equivalent Spanish words for what they were saying. It was funny because that’s probably pretty much how the show goes down.

Patterson Spitzer Auditions — This pretty much felt like filler for the final few minutes of the show.

The FCC ruled at one point it’s OK to say Fuck on TV if it’s live and just slips out, like if you are being shot at in Iraq. They also ruled it was OK to use fuck on a TV show as long as it was used as an adverb at one time.

If I was Cee Lo Green I would have just sang Fuck You and if anyone has a problem with it let NBC deal with it.

It’s not that he was forced to sing “Forget You,” that’s just the radio version of the song (which was also used on “Glee” – for once they didn’t alter the lyrics like they have done with other songs). They certainly don’t play the “Fuck You” version on any Top 40 radio station.

And even though the Secret Word sketch is pretty much the same every time, I still love to see how Kristen Wiig will change it up a bit. The charades part was very funny and her Bollywood-ish song was pretty good too. And Paltrow’s “My game butler” cracked me up!
