Desperate Housewives – An old school twist livens things up

Susan gets a job, Bree gets menopause, Renee and Lynette start a business, Gaby thinks Carlos is going gay, and Beth finally learns Paul's secret ... but she has a shocking secret of her own!

- Season 7, Episode 7 - "A Humiliating Business"

After weeks of griping about the lack of anything interesting happening on Desperate Housewives, we finally get an episode with some real meat to the story, some nice character moments, a bunch of cool guest stars — John Schneider, Nancy Travis, Erika Eleniak, Harriet Sansom Harris — and some really funny dialog. Keith is turning out to be the best boyfriend in the world by not freaking out over Bree’s onset of menopause, nor by the fact that she doesn’t want any more kids. He took that very well, so I hope there isn’t something darker coming with his character.

I hate to say that I think I like Susan better without Mike around. She has to take care of herself and MJ and Teri Hatcher did a great job of showing Susan’s excitement about the job offer from Lynette and Renee and then her disappointment when she found out it was only to be Lynette’s nanny (by the way, who was watching MJ while Susan was babysitting for Lynette?). It was nice to see Gaby being Gaby and not once having to deal with any kids, although dealing with Carlos, Bob and Lee was a handful for her.

And Paul Young’s story is finally coming into focus. We now know he wants revenge on the people of Wisteria Lane for the way they treated him after his arrest and conviction for murder, but the real kicker was finding out Beth is the daughter of Felicia Tillman! Ever since she spoke on the phone with her mother last week, I’ve been waiting for the big reveal, and I have to say I did not see that one coming. It was a great end to a pretty great episode, very reminiscent of early Desperate Housewives, and I hope now that things seem to be falling into place the rest of the season should be a heck of a ride!

“I must say, for a virgin you were certainly open-minded.” – Paul to Beth after finally consummating their marriage

“Oh my God, are you doing what I think you’re doing” – Renee
“If you think I’m trying to stuff my boob in my daughter’s mouth, then yes!” – Lynette

“The prize that comes with this cereal is that we can afford the milk.” – Susan to MJ who wanted his favorite cereal

“I’d love to skip those three days a month when I’m cranky and irritable.” – Lynette referring to Bree’s menopause
“Just three days, huh?” – Mrs. McClusky

“She’s obviously flat broke. No one lives down wind from a pet shop by choice.” – Renee on Susan’s situation

“It’s like getting a watch when you retire for a job well done.” – Bree’s doctor explaining menopause

“Bob’s college nickname was Flipper. And it wasn’t because of his dolphin tattoo.” – Lee warning Gaby about Carlos spending time with Bob

“I’m sorry. That was so dull I actually started to dream.” – Renee responding to Lynette’s business presentation

“Oh, and if you ever do feel the need to flip a straight guy on the lane, I’d start with Tom Scavo. I always felt he was three beers away.” – Gaby to Bob
“Two!” – Bob

“We only broke up four months ago. How did you gain so much weight?” – Bob to Lee
