Modern Family – Now that is a racist commercial

All Asian babies look alike. Wait -- that wasn't the point? I do know one thing for sure: coke pants and rehab trips aren't the only pitfalls of child stardom. Lily learns this the hard way.

- Season 2, Episode 7 - "Chirp"

Poor Lily! I have to admit, I was on Cameron’s side in the whole “furniture store commercial” argument.  Sure, we all know what happens to a lot of kids who grow up in the spotlight, but one afternoon while the kid’s a baby? I honestly don’t see the harm. However, the fact that the commercial in question is the most ridiculously racist ad ever does put a pall on the whole situation.

It’s a bad day all around for the kids on Modern Family. First Lily is denied her stardom, then Manny runs through a wall and gets his friend fired. Poor Haley has it worse than anyone though. Not only has she caught Claire’s cold, but she’s faced with the prospect of her parents getting divorced.

I actually found this storyline to be rather interesting. Not just because Dylan’s back (love him), but because it addresses the most confusing thing about this show: how the hell does Phil support a big family in a big house as a real estate agent in this economy? Claire doesn’t work, and California was hit ridiculously hard by the housing crisis. It just doesn’t make sense. After tonight, it still doesn’t really make sense, but at least it was somewhat addressed by Phil admitting that he’s had a bad month and that it’s scary.

Speaking of scary, I love how Jay’s just at the point where seeing Manny bust through a wall doesn’t even illicit much of a reaction. I really thought this storyline was going to go somewhere else — I figured we’d at least see the guy who was fired again in some capacity, since Manny was making such a big deal out of it. So I was pleasantly surprised when the payoff was simply Jay calling Manny “my kid.” They didn’t make a big giant deal out if it, but it was a really sweet moment.

All in all, it wasn’t the most hilarious episode of Modern Family that I’ve ever seen, but it certainly had its funny moments. Save-zilla was just jaw-droppingly insane, and Phil going crazy on the smoke detectors with his college cheerleading baton was amazing. I can certainly relate, having ripped my share of chirping smoke detectors from the ceiling. What was your favorite moment of the week?
