Cougar Town is now 100% cougar free

I have to admit, I wasn’t feeling tonight’s Cougar Town. There were a couple little bits that amused me, but overall I’m let down after last week. Really, could just be my mood. I hate when I realize my shitty mood actually affects my ability to enjoy entertainment otherwise adore. No, I think it was just the second episode of this season that I didn’t love. The first being the Jennifer Aniston fiasco.

So the little sidebar on the title tonight was 100% Cougar Free. It must be eating away at the show creators far more than it does me that they decided to go with a title that was so “in the moment.” Do people even use the term “cougar” any more? It really was ridiculous and unnecessary in the first place, and they’re stuck with a term that was out of popular culture even before the first season ended. We had “Still Cougar Town” and now “100% Cougar Free Cougar Town.” If it bothers them so much that they are going to bring attention to it every week, then they should do an episode that will change the name. They have a new game every week, why not just go for broke and give it a try.

After the big breakup of Laurie and Smith last week, she tried to con everyone into thinking it was just a walk in the park to lose her first love. I knew it was a con, but it annoyed me rather than entertained. I did like that she got “vagazalled” since she’s single once again. And, no, I have no idea how to spell the word, but thought the short-term solution of glue and glitter was a much better idea than running out and getting a tattoo or something, so I give credit where it is due.

The story didn’t seem well planned and yet felt contrived, if that’s even possible. Jules wanting to control Bobby (probably as payback for his cheating and breaking them up in the first place) is no surprise. Ellie acting smug turns out to be an act, and she’s not as smart as she lets on. Travis has followed in her well-dug footsteps. They’re all hurting, and hiding it. Afraid to let down their barriers. Was that the point? Needing to hide behind what is familiar and comforting rather than let someone see the real you? Maybe the moral of the story was that even the closest of friends can’t help but be insecure, pompous and assuming.

A good friend thought it was a hilarious effort, and I was left unsatisfied. Maybe the nuances were lost on me. What about you?
