Weeds – Silas didn’t really fit in at college anyway

Just when we thought the Botwins were getting all comfortable and weird in Seattle, along came a slew of messes to send them back out on the run. Will they follow Shane, or head in the opposite direction?

- Season 6, Episode 5 - "Boomerang"

At the end of my review of last week’s episode of Weeds, I opined that the cops had shown up outside medical marijuana lady’s house looking for Nancy as a result of Shane’s Mommy group. When I’m wrong I admit it, and boy was I wrong.

Apparently, when Silas and Andy had stolen plates for the minivan, they’d lifted ones connected to thousands of dollars in overdue parking tickets. Nancy and Andy got away okay, but the van got the boot.

And the van incident also made it inevitable that the family would be traced back to where they came from, leading all sorts of folks their way. Once again the Botwin family was on the run … but not before they took care of some business.

And before I forget, not only were the cops not there because of Shane, but Shane appeared to have the Mommy group incident well under control, blackmailing each one into silence individually. How he worked that fast to get dirt on them I’ll never understand, but the boy definitely has criminal mastermind in him. Too bad they followed him back to the hotel … and, you know, called child protective services.

Doug’s miracle moment, courtesy of OnStar, was awesome. I’m not sure how likely it is that he’s a chosen one, of course, but that was cool. It seems he won’t be reunited with Andy and Silas anytime soon, but who knows … he may be fun with Shane, too. Especially once he learns that Shane killed someone (or does he know that already?).

Andy and Nancy had a real moment waiting for the #43 bus. Too bad it won’t ultimately mean anything, but it was nice while it lasted. For just a few seconds Nancy let her vulnerabilities show, and she seemed just a little more real. And then it was gone.

When Cesar and Ignacio showed up at the hotel, everything got a bit too un-Weeds. This show’s been all over the map, but the danger/fear level was ratcheted up as Cesar peeked into windows, and suddenly season six wasn’t only not getting back to basics, but it’d become more about the animalistic definition of survival than the middle-class one. I wonder if Shane will be used as leverage to get Nancy, or if he’ll be the perpetrator punished for his sins. Because, you know, he did kill Pilar.

The end of the episode, with Nancy hiding, child protective services knocking at the door, and Latrice the housekeeper popping up, was sheer madness. Kudos to Andy for the levity he provided when he popped out of the bathroom naked holding the baby, but other than that it was just too much.

I’m not really sure what comes next here. This season was billed as seeing the family on the run, and what I got from the promos for the first few episodes was that it would see them going back to simpler (albeit still post-Judah’s death) times. But with Shane captured and their lives in Seattle over, are the Botwins heading back to California (and/or Mexico) and a run-in with Esteban and Pilar’s people? Are they (and we) really not free of all the season five noise?

Without knowing what will be I can’t say that I won’t like it, but I know that I was excited for what I imagined this season was going to be like. Hopefully reality will be just as much fun.

“Why didn’t anybody tell me how awesome college is?” – Silas
“Cause you were never gonna go. It would just be mean, like telling a blind person how awesome colors are.” – Shane
“Shut up. I may not be academic smart, but I’m smart. I started my own business. I read.” – Silas
“To old dudes in your underwear.” – Shane
“That’s it; you’re going down.” – Silas
“Is that what the old man said?” – Shane

“I tried to read the Bible. I did. But it always felt like a much less awesome Lord of the Rings.” – Doug to God
