Rather than a funeral, last night’s episode of Weeds seemed more like a birth to me. I realize we’re still missing the beginning of the new life, but part of me felt as if we’d just started from scratch once more.
I was surprised that Silas wasn’t ready to be a team player. Seems unlike him, despite the fact that he’s gone in his own direction of late. Once he chose to stay home for the sake of his brothers last season instead of travelling through Europe, I figured he’d stand behind Shane even as personally he couldn’t understand what had become of Shane. I mean, I knew that ultimately he was going to hang around, but even that brief moment of hesitation seemed like too much.
She could have done more, but I was still pleased at the amount of reprimanding that Nancy gave to Shane … for her, of course. I didn’t except her to raise her voice, and I certainly didn’t see her hitting him. Twice. Nice move spanking him as well. Where Shane being stone-cold was funny last week, last night it seemed old.
There’s irony in the Botwins heading North and trying to cross the Canadian border after all they’ve done on both sides of the Mexican line. I can see Andy in the Great White North, especially in whatever parts people wear red and black checkered shirts and ear-flap hats. But the rest of them might have stood out like a couple of Caucasians dealing drugs in Southern California … oh.
I was wondering if Nancy had simply forgotten Stevie’s birth certificate, or if it was something Esteban was holding with his own personal paperwork. It seemed unusual for her to forget after remembering to grab everyone else’s passports. Shane is super crazy, suggesting they hide Stevie in a cooler, sedate him with cough syrup, seal the lid, and add some air holes. Super crazy.
You have to be mildly impressed with stage one in the family’s new life — they came up with the Newman family and followed through on it. In the world of Weeds, that’s an accomplishment. Brilliant idea by Andy to stop in the diner’s kitchen to get the name of the local fake ID guy.
Who turned out to be little more than a kid (and his mom). “The Chinaman” seems like he could be a good friend for Shane; too bad Shane didn’t go with Silas and Andy to get the paperwork. Loved the Hooters gift card payment method!
Which brings us to the ID burial service, the scene that caused me to initially posit that I didn’t see this as a funeral. I realize the past needs to be buried before moving into the future, but they’re never really going to bury their past, so the symbolism was lost on them a bit. In any event, what’s done is done, so it’s what is yet to happen that interests me more.
Like preparing to be hunted by Cesar. Because, he’s coming for them. Being the Newmans isn’t going to help that. But don’t forget that Nancy still has something on Cesar — he was involved in Nancy’s attempted shooting by Pilar’s goon. That might still have legs (and blackmail-ability). But however she gets out of his clutches in the end, my money’s on Cesar showing up sooner or later.
I hope the Newmans are equipped for guests.
