“It’s ‘TBD’, Shawn.” – Gus
“What’s TBS?” – Shawn
“The superstation.” – Gus
“Is it really, though?” – Shawn
Just before watching this episode, Deb and I caught up on last week’s first. In a way that was a bad move, because last week’s episode blew this one out of the water. In fact, as far as quotables go, the above one is really one of the only ones that was worth remarking. Now, that’s not to say this was a bad episode, just that it didn’t hold a candle to last week.
What I found kind of odd in this episode was how we were quickly led to believe that Peters and Boone were behind the murder, with Wilkins mentioning “two guys” he was working with. But then it really sort of went nowhere, as far as with Shawn suspecting them. It was probably just a clever way of throwing off the viewer, seeing as often times the notable guest stars are the prime suspects in our eyes.
Really what this episode was about — aside from the case, of course — was a glimpse at a future Shawn and Gus. For that, this episode worked very well, especially with William Devane and Carl Weathers. Other than that, is there really a whole lot more to say about this episode?
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the pineapple from this episode is pictured above. I love that Carl Weathers was handling such a fruity drink. Good luck!
I enjoyed this episode mostly. I feared I wasn’t going to, as the first half (working against each other) didn’t work for me. I was kinda cringing. When they were working together (“The Grapples”) it worked much better to me and it picked up interest for me.
Nice to see Juliet kicking ass too.
I liked it too. I don’t think it was as quotable as last week’s, but it was good.
So, it seemed Devane and Weathers were supposed to be like the Shawn and Gus of their day. What would have really brought that home, and given a lot of quotable lines would have been if their characters used pop culture references from their own time, ones that made Shawn and Gus go: huh? And for them to try to figure it out with their own references. If they had done that, this episode would have been incredible. Frankly, I’m shocked they didn’t think of it.

Good point! Something else: if Peters and Boone were Shawn and Gus of their time, then did that make Shawn’s dad the Lassie of their time? In the flashback, those two were brought in his place for the case.
Shawn’s dad is definitely the Lassie of their time. Shoot, he’s the older Lassie of their time! If they would have used both of those points – bringing dad and Lassie up against the same obstacles with both sets of detectives – and tossed in the quotables from their respective eras, it would have been excellent. Given such high profile guest stars, it was really a disappointment. Too bad, because Devane has a great use of sarcasm, and they didn’t even touch it. Who writes for them? I feel I need to share my opinion. Are they on Twitter? Didn’t someone just visit the set?

I think the season has been really strong, and I actually thought this latest episode was hilarious. It was jam packed with the comedy, and I was laughing (OUT LOUD) throughout, which I don’t always do.
