True Blood – Three deaths and a dream

While I had a feeling that the death of one of these two was going to be coming sooner or later, I was a little surprised when Russell went all “off with his head” in the episode’s final scene.

- Season 3, Episode 7 - "Hitting the Ground"

Last week at San Diego Comic Con, the participants in the True Blood panel discussed that, while it may have seemed like there had been less death on the show this season, that the ones that were coming were going to matter. This week saw the loss of two multi-season recurring characters (and a werewolf no one really likes). While I had a feeling that the death of one of these two was going to be coming sooner or later, I was a little surprised when Russell went all “off with his head” in the episode’s final scene.

The Lorena storyline had run its course. She sired Bill. Bill wasn’t as crazy as her. We’ve seen that story played out in flashback and current time about three too many times. Thankfully, Sookie has put an end to her once and for all. Unfortunately, at least for her, their escape lead to her becoming Bill’s brunch. While Sookie might scream at the sight of her once vamp-friend, we all know that the phrase I should have was “once and future.” No matter how much I think Bill and Sookie are the worst couple on TV since … erm … well any crappy couple, my opinion wasn’t in this recipe, as my father tends to say. We can believe that Alcide might have a chance, but that would be folly. We can know that Eric is her best match, but there’s nothing there but disappointment.

The Magister’s death, however, I did not see coming. Especially after Russell goes through the trouble of getting him to marry him and the Queen? It isn’t like the King cares so much about the Magister properly reporting his nuptials, but he obviously wanted to rub his rebellion in the nose of this mysterious Authority, and that just doesn’t seem as easy now as it did before, now, does it?

I’m holding judgment on Sookie’s dalliance into the odd world of the lighted pond. I’ve always been interested in the story of finding out exactly what Sookie is, but this isn’t exactly the start that I was hoping for. It was weird, but weird in that True Blood way that can either be really cool (Jason and Amy’s V trips from Season One) or really not (MaryAnn, I still blame you for all the problems in Season Two).

Jason, other than giving us a couple of great quotes, still is pining after Crystal. It is getting rather annoying, both to the audience, and obviously Hoyt. You’ve got to hope that there is some supernatural explanation for this rather sudden love. He has been acting so far out of character … and by out of character, I don’t mean he’s suddenly lost his “brilliance.” That would just take away all of my fun.

And the only thing that can take away all of my fun is anything having to do with Sam Merlotte and dog fighting. Or his desire to know, and then not know, his family. It feels like they’re just forcing a storyline for him to continue to be in the show. It is a by-product of an ensemble cast supporting a story that focuses on just a few characters. Everyone else is just given busy work to do.

Notes & Quotes

  • “I’ve never tasted anything like you … What are you?” – Lorena
“I’m the bitch that’s going to kill you!” – Sookie
  • “You know, it’s funny. I never thought I was smart enough to get depressed, but, here I am.” – Jason
  • Hoyt’s new relationship with Bernadette … erm … Summer is cute enough to make me wonder if I liked him and Jessica a bit too much.
  • “ … Unless specifically authorized to do so by the Authority? Yes, well perhaps you’ve not quite grasped the subtext of our early exchange, but there’s a new fucking Authority in town!” – Russell
