Ellen DeGeneres – Love for a departing American Idol judge

Ellen DeGeneres is leaving American Idol. And CliqueClack is going to miss her....

Here at CliqueClack, we exude the love.

We exude the love toward lots of things: Caprica. Lost. Mad Men. House. Breaking Bad. Reality Shows.

And some of us — a few of us — even exude the love at Ellen. Yes … that Ellen. Ellen DeGeneres.

You see … it’s a sad day here at the CliqueClack offices. It was announced today Ellen will be departing the American Idol judges’ table after but a single season of service. She’s quoted as saying:

“… while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings.”

That’s okay, Ellen. We understand. But that doesn’t we won’t miss you here at CliqueClack.

I’ve gathered a few quotations by some of my colleagues and myself, lifted from some of the posts we’ve done, to show you our love for you….

~~~~~~~
“… will someone hold me back from throttling Ellen DeGeneres? You’d think she’d be able to contribute something to the mix. But, instead, she’s inanely cracking wise out of left field one moment and grasping desperately at straws trying to contribute anything during another … *sigh* … Shoot me now …”
~~~~~~~

“Take, for example, new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres. Whereas Paula Abdul became progressively unintelligible as the seasons rolled by, and Kara DioGuardi can at least flash some musical credentials (even so she’s pushing the limit of tolerance and stupidity), Ellen looks like a completely uninformed, clueless dope.” – Aryeh S.

~~~~~~~
“… “You couldn’t look cuter” was about the only comment Ellen DeGeneres had to make post-performance. Another perfect example of why she will not, cannot be allowed back next year … let alone next week.”
~~~~~~~

“Dear American Idol Powers That Be: Thank you for your stroke of brilliance in appointing Ellen DeGeneres as your new fourth judge. You’ve just taken a huge step to make your show not only a fun singing competition, but a hilarious one.” – Debbie McDuffee

~~~~~~~
(Commenting on contestant Lee DeWyze) “Did Lee look like he came prepared to win this competition? With the performance of “The Boxer” he certainly did. Ellen DeGeneres: ‘I couldn’t be prouder if I birthed you myself.’ Yep. Ellen is right on track, stating the awkward as is her mien … *sigh* …”
~~~~~~~

“Finding a woman stand-up comic is like finding a unicorn – they’re rare, mystical beings like Kathy Griffin and Ellen DeGeneres that you hear of once in a while, as if from legend.” - Julia Hass

~~~~~~~
And this … probably my most beloved quotation from Ellen of the past season on American Idol, Ellen commenting on Casey James “Hold On I’m Coming” by Sam & Dave:
“You know you’re safe … but … you can do … and it was generic … but you have to … there needs to be more … still, it was good … but there could be …”
~~~~~~~

Yes … we’re going to miss you, Ellen.

But we know where to find you. If our need becomes overwhelming, we know you’re right there in beautiful Burbank, at the Warner Bros. Studios….

P.S.  What’s this I hear about Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez as replacements … ?!?!?

I think Ellen is a great comic, but for Idol, they need a judge that is in the Music Business, or at least has a passing knowledge. Especially with Simon’s upcoming departure. If necessary, bring back Paula–she might have been weird, but she had her fans. Also, they do need a tough-guy to take Simon’s place. He may have upset a lot of people, but he knew what he was talking about. If you are going to be in a business as rough as the Music Business is–you need to get used to hearing the rejection.

. . . . .

Don’t get me wrong: Ellen is good in her own way. I even dug her as Dori in “Finding Nemo”.

But as an Idol judge? I just didn’t see where they were going with that with the original announcement …

I want Chris Isaak and Bette Midler! No one ever listens to me …

We’re listening, Tara. It’s just that …

I don’t watch Idol much (much more than I have to), but for my money, Harry Connick Jr did an outstanding job on the show, actually teaching the contestants. If he were to join the show as a judge, it might be enough to get me to watch the show.

I would watch anything with Harry Connick Jr. in it! I completely agree with Ivey – he’s the real deal. His critiques are not going to be stupid things like, “It was a little pitchy. You need to be more original.” He can actually point specific things out and teach the contestants to be better singers. Besides the fact that he’s a bona fide musician, he has a personality. He’s genuinely funny without trying too hard. Whenever Ellen said something slightly funny, you could tell that she’d worked on it. Harry seems to have the type of outgoing personality and sharp wit that allows him to be spontaneously hilarious. Unfortunately, he probably would never do it because American Idol is so focused on pop music, which is not his genre.

I just don’t know what Idol could offer him to come aboard.

I don’t think there is anything that could be offered that he would accept …

Ruby: The Harry Connick Jr. episode was one of my favorites of Idol. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see that kind of critique on an on-going basis week in and week out?
