True Blood – Bon Temps brings the show down

Why is it that 'True Blood' gets so much more interesting on the other side of the Bon Temps city limits?

- Season 3, Episode 6 - "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues"

Looks like we’re finally beginning to see how some of the Bon Temps stories are connected. Specifically with Lafayette’s problems seemingly about to become Jason’s. About the only thing that could have made Sam’s story marginally interesting is this whole dog-fighting angle. While not on the same level of last’s season’s MaryAnn debacle, it seems that the show is being carried by the story lines outside of Bon Temps, but pulled back  down by the stories based there.

Eric continues to be the most interesting character on this show. After last week, we know that he has a serious grudge dating back to his human life. He’s playing a dangerous game, and I’m not sure where it leads next. When he figures out that Russell is behind the death of his human family — that is, if he hasn’t already — it will be lights out for the King of Mississippi. I don’t know the upside to waiting, other than keeping himself out of trouble when all the cards are on the table. I don’t think things are going to end well for the King.

I think I’m probably alone here, but I found Tara’s bravery pretty surprising. There’s a difference between running for your life, and what she did (which was, for the record, biting open a vampire’s neck, sleeping with him, and then bashing his head in with a mace). Despite her bravado, she’s always come across to me as a victim. Her actions tonight, though, have changed that opinion.

It goes without saying, but we’re seeing a side of Jason we’ve not seen before. It is weird to see him actually caring for someone other than himself for a change. Other than his sister, he’s always put himself first. In that first scene with Crystal, you could tell that he wasn’t just saying the words. I figured there might some kind of Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers thing, but I didn’t expect her to be engaged to one of the douchebags that Lafayette has been dealing with.

Considering that we’ve been introduced to the Queen and the other royalty of the vampire South for a season or so now, it is hard to forget that many of our other characters, Sookie especially, are still in the dark as to how the vampire world works. I’d have been much happier if she’d asked the King questions that I didn’t actually know the answers to already.

Notes & Quotes

  • “I would love to rip you open and wear your ribcage as a hat.” – Lorena
  • “Those are dumped out of a can into a big pot and heated up. Where do you think you are, lady, Red Lobster?” – Arlene
  • “My turn … Is Lorena going to kill Bill?” – Sookie (We can only dream and hope!)
  • Is it telling that Sophie-Anne asked about Hadley’s safety several times?
  • “I ain’t doing nothing you didn’t do yourself.” – QB1                                                                   “Yeah, but here’s the difference between you and me….” – Jason

LOL – I love that you went with QB1. LOLOL

Tara finally did something worthy. It’s been two seasons since she has shown even an inkling of spunk. That scene of her ripping Franklin’s neck was atrocious. Seems every week I am eating dinner when it’s on – thankfully I was through by the time it came on. Whew!

The “royalty” of the vampires are downright embarrassing. If the blond chick who is always on the news knew what a sorry representation of her people these clowns are, she’d have them removed.

The scene between Lorena and Bill was a nice change to their normal antagonistic behavior. And I believed Bill when he said he would have liked to have known her before.

Eric is still my favorite character, and I like how he can easily manipulate both sides to his favor. I hope he’s in it for the long haul.

Interesting episode – as always, look forward to next week!
