The story lines that have been introduced in the first couple of episodes of True Blood are starting to come a bit more into focus. We still are far from having any answers (I’m looking at you Franklin, and the King of Mississippi even more so), but at least, I think, we’ve identified most of the players. Alcide makes an interesting addition, and Franklin’s moves are curious to say the least. If Bon Temps is going to be the flash point for the action is we saw with Maryann, then the town is in for more trouble than it has seen before. That being said, I would love to know what is motivating Bill, Franklin, and, well, everyone in the state of Mississippi.
Lorena, at least in the flashbacks to Bill’s visit home, acted very surprisingly. The advice she gave Bill was sound, that he can’t go back to his old life. And she gave that message in a way that didn’t make her come across as the twisted psycho that we know her to be back in current times (Get it? Twisted? That was just all kinds of wrong). Bill has now finally betrayed Sookie … Wonder how long it is going to take her to find out? Methinks about 2.3 seconds after the next time Sookie runs into Lorena.
If Bill is able to get by that problem, the question continues to haunt him on whether or not he should turn Sookie so they can live undeadly ever after. He is obviously against the idea, but how can you love someone, and let him or her die (or die without coming back to life as … hell, you know what I mean)? I can’t imagine it is a fun place to be in, or decision to make, for either Bill or Sookie. Or, they can just break up, and Sookie can go lovingly to Eric’s arms.
The Hoyt and Jason show continues to make for nice laughs. I was very afraid that Jason might actually find a way onto the sheriff department’s payroll. And, by “very afraid,” I mean I’m now very disappointed that we will miss out on the comedic genius that would have come with such a development. Jason Stackhouse is one of the funniest characters on television today (I’d like to see him and Brittany from Glee on a date).
I’m still not able to build a lot of interest in Sam’s storyline. I’m surprised he made it back to Bon Temps as quickly as he did, and more so that the family followed him back. Nothing good is going to come of his new relationship with his family.
Let me pose a hypothetical here: If James Frain had been cast as Bill Compton, would he be nearly as boring as currently portrayed? Franklin’s dark, mysterious motivations are much more interesting than Bill’s. Even though, at this point, Bill’s motivations are laid out much more openly than Franklin’s, albeit not by much. If his work for the Queen of Louisiana mirrors that of the storyline in the book, I’m hoping it ends badly for him.
Arlene’s lying to Andy is going to come back and bite her in the rump. So, ten weeks … Would that make the baby Rene’s?
Notes & Quotes
Re James Frain as Bill…um. No. Too (no offense James) unattractive. That man needs about 20 pounds or so to fill out his strange head. With regard to Franklin – I so don’t know who the hell he is. I don’t know where he came from or why. But saying that, it makes perfect sense that Tara did something stupid with him. If she had died with Eggs, I would have been pleased.
Love Pam, and still can’t believe she also plays the preacher’s wife on Secret Life of the American Teenager. Too funny.
I was very affected by the Bill attacks Lorena stuff. I mean, to “kill” her while having sex. That is so many kinds of wrong. That he would want to do that, and continue having sex, and that she would pledge her love to him under those conditions. Talked about frakked up. Just ewwww.
I hope that something happens to get Jason on the force. Those poor bastards taking the tests have NO IDEA what they are getting into in that town, and no written test about alcohol levels will ever prepare them for what they will encounter in Bon Temps!
I’m wondering how far off the beaten path the show has gone from the books.
Arlene is lying to Terry, not Andy. What is up with her makeup btw, it’s looking more whorish than normal.
Great episode. I want an Eric & Lafayette spinoff show.
James is better as Franklin. He plays the dark, devious role very well. Bill’s character is too serious and boring for James
