True Blood – A storm is brewing

As we start a new season, the one thread that ties all of our disparate storylines together is that as crazy as their lives were, it's only going to get worse from here on out.

- Season 3, Episode 1 - "Bad Blood"

Wow, it has been a long, long time since Bill Compton was kidnapped, no? The last season of True Blood was one part amazing, two parts crazy uneven mess. As much as Maryann the Maenad tried to suck the life out Bon Temps (literally, and, well, figuratively), the goings-on in Dallas, the Fellowship of the Sun, and the introduction of characters like Godric and the Queen of Louisiana tilted the balance in the right direction. As we start a new season, the one thread that ties all of our disparate storylines together is that as crazy as their lives were, it’s only going to get worse from here on out.

Eric has gotten himself into a bit of a bind. Despite working at the direction of the Queen with the trafficking of V, I don’t think she’s going to have his back when the road gets tough. Hell, with as much power as the Magister seemed to have over both the Sheriff and the Queen, I don’t think either one of them will be able to politic themselves safe when they inevitably get caught. I know that not everyone loved the Queen when she was introduced last year, but I enjoy the hell out of the character and her homage to Parker Posey’s Vampire in Blade: Trinity (Only less with the batshit-crazy).

Speaking of batshit-crazy, I’m not really enjoying the road that Tara seems to be starting down. I’m hoping that this will be the last time we have to put up with her mother, but the seeds planted with the Reverend lead me to believe I’ll be disappointed to that end. I do love Lafayette’s protective streak over her cousin, but it’s about the only positive upside to that entire series of scenes tonight.

Poor Sookie. Horrible timing, what with the boring boyfriend kidnapped just as she was going to accept his proposal. Instead, her path leads her right to Eric, and his … erm … activities. It was interesting that Eric, too, had sent people to pick up Bill, only to have failed. You can’t help but love a Thelma and Louise style search party starring Sookie and Jessica, though. Anything was better than the day that our favorite underage vampire was doing, right?

Despite not having not read the books, I was not exactly surprised to see the werewolves that circled Bill in the end. The whole Vampire/Werewolf thing is almost as clichéd these days as sex on television (though, I’m not judging the sex on television thing, in case you’re asking). I’m looking forward though to both a new race of characters on the show, and, what I’m thinking will be a completely different agenda to those we’ve seen on screen so far.

Finally, how can you not feel for Jason? I like to call him the “anti-moral core” of True Blood, and tonight was a perfect example. Despite him wanting to be a different man (a desire that I doubt he fully understands), he fell back into his old patterns supposedly to cover his tracks. A damn shame though, that despite two beautiful dog shrinks to “work with,” he can’t seem to get the job done.

Notes & Quotes

  • “I’m sorry that you fell in love with a serial killer. Alright, but honestly, who here hasn’t?” – Arlene
  • OK, the transfer of Bill’s blood was a bit over the top.
  • “Well, for you normal is going out and getting tail, so I suggest you start there.” – Andy
“That was old Jason. I want to be new Jason.” – Jason
“Well when this blows over you can going out not get laid all you want to, so you need to be the Jason Stackhouse everyone knows. So conscience off, dick on!” – Andy
  • I’ve always been a fan of Jason and Hoyt together, and I think them living together is going to lead to good shenanigans.
  • I think if Chekov had lived in a time with wood chippers, he would have said that you don’t introduce a wood chipper in the first act without expecting someone to go through it in the third? The one that Jason and Hoyt were working on seemed much too featured to be just background, but alas, no wood chipper fun tonight….
  • “Bitch? You and me bridge? Ain’t gonna never gonna motherfucking happen.” – Lafayette
  • “What? Hoyt, if you and me gonna be roommates, there’s a certain amount of pussy overflow you’re going to have to get used to dealing with.” – Jason
  • Love how Lafayette is far from being recovered, as shown by his meeting with Pam.
  • I’m not sure how Sam’s story is finally going to circle back around to Bon Temps, but the sooner the better is all I’m saying.

LOVED all of the one-liners last night! Thanks for publishing those.

I jumped into True Blood last year in reruns and only know bits and pieces, so I am more confused than ever with the start of Season 3. lol.

Pam is my favorite as of last night. Too much pink – not possible!

Oh my…some of those scenes tonight made my blush. Having read the books, but biggest complaint is not how the story lines differ, but my problem is Sookie is portrayed as such an airhead on TBlood. Disappointing to me.

I am beyond po’ed that I canceled my premium cable, so I see TB on DVD about a year from now. *sigh* I just watched the entire second season in 4 days.It was fairly slow for me until about episode 7, when they got away from that church.
Godrick was an excellent character, and I wish they hadn’t killed him off after an episode and a half. Perhaps that how it goes in the books, though?
And maybe I should get my premium channels back. Just for the next 12 weeks or so!
