In Plain Sight – Meeting Marshall’s Dad? Sweet!

I know I asked for an all Marshall ep. But, without Mary, he’s like folded cutting paper, seemingly bland yet with depths within his folds.

- Season 3, Episode 8 - "Sonn of Mann"

A Mann’s Tale

  • Marshall as lead marshal. Hmm. While Mary is snarky and dismissive, I think I prefer her bedside realism over Marshall’s origami idealism. In fact, I was surprised at how bland (or annoyingly cheerful) I found Marshall in the witness-of-the week flashback. As a supporting character he’s kickass awesome, but he definitely needs Mary for contrast. Despite Weller viewing Mann as a man of mystery, I hope he doesn’t stay that way. I loved the quiet reveals into Mann’s character.
  • Geoff Pierson (Dexter, 24) did a great job as Marshall’s dad & an old school marshal. Seth Mann’s clearly another Chuck Norris version who can catch bullets with his teeth, serve as a human body scan, and track down teens in his sleep. My thoughts while watching him went from, “Man, he’s a douche,” to “Correction: he’s a major douche.” to “Awww, what a sweet dad.”

All About Mary

  • Mary is great with her witnesses, but she is terrible with her family. I support her trace on Brandi, but not her background check on her brother. Plus, if Mary’s ever going to move on she needs to give up on those letters.
  • Hmm. So, Squish Returns. On the one hand, yay. On the other hand, I hated the sister drama. I know she wants Mary’s respect, but she can’t borrow 20k, disappear for almost two months, lie about her whereabouts, and then say she changed while returning to live in her sister’s house rent-free (you know, the sister who was kidnapped and almost assaulted/killed because of her).
  • Yet another Shannon sibling. Can someone neuter their father? I thought Brandi/Jinx weren’t certain if Laura was their sister or not. Plus, didn’t Laura say she had hidden their existence from her family? So, how did the Shannon Wonder Twins activate? Is it wrong to admit I think the brother’s totally hot? However, it’s odd, I didn’t miss Jinx. I don’t want them to write her off the show, but I didn’t miss her presence at the final scene.

Random Thoughts:

  • Man, Mary’s a great hunter – I loved the under the bus move.
  • This is the second time we’re introduced to the ‘hunter’ portion of the Marshal program. I wonder if Mary might return to that branch as a season ender. Although externally she’s a tracker, internally she belongs to WitSec.
  • This episode’s first half felt slightly off-balance, but it still felt ‘less empty’ than the first 6 episodes.
  • Marshall’s a great Marshal. I loved watching him request a car check on his witness.
  • Did they bring on Scott because Laura Prepon was too expensive?
  • While I loved seeing Peter, could Joshua Malina receive more than 2 lines per episode? Is there any man (save Rafe) who doesn’t know how to placate Mary with either alcohol or sugar?
  • So, if I join a drug cartel I can get a cool boarding school deal? Sweet.
  • Marshall and the kid answered my question from two weeks ago: Yes, serving as a counselor/confessor/advisor/protector/friend/guardian/parent is part of what the WitSec Marshals do.
  • I really don’t like the new cast members, especially the kid.

Things I liked:

  • Watching Marshall crouch protectively over his witness and then pull a ‘dad’ on him later: “This is far from okay and this is far from over.”
  • Weller’s acting. Seriously, his eyes are amazing. Can you sense I have a not-so-secret crush on him? Marshall’s didacticism might bore me, but I enjoyed watching his facial empathy when with the teen and when viewing his elementary school art.
  • Marshal and Mary: I enjoy watching them reveal small parts of themselves to each other.
  • Who didn’t love Mary’s sadistic glee?
  • Marshall excusing his two partners who drank “too much red bull” (Mary) and “sanka” (his dad).
  • Marshall running a DNA test on his father in elementary school.
  • High school Marshall and high school Mary:
    • Marshall: I wish I had known you in high school.
    • Mary: High school me would’ve eaten high school you alive.
  • Marshall’s facial response envisioning high school Mary.

My favorite part was Mary, for all her ribbing, unflinchingly and unfailingly having Marshall’s back in every way, particularly laying the straight truth down for Seth about his son.

Second was Marshall instantly and sweetly connecting with the girlfriend in the interrogation room. And him pulling the dad bit at the end in the hospital room.

Actually, I support Mary’s full background check on the man claiming to be their half-brother, for whom Brandi had borrowed the $20,000 and avoided/lied to her sister and her boyfriend, much more than her snooping on Brandi yet again, who’d made her own bed. Why was he in her living room? It would have been irresponsible for her not to check this suspicious character out as thoroughly as possible. Once again, I missed Eleanor, who definitely would have been both a researcher and a confidante for Mary in this matter.

I watched Aaron Ashmore play a douchey, two-timing, lying, stealing-to-feed-his-drug-addiction weasel for too many years on Smallville to appreciate Scott here, hot or not.

Real masters are invisible. They don’t show (sell) theirself and their art for money. Samurai said: “When you’ll became a real swordmaster, you won’t need to use any swords”.
