When Glee filled in the rest of New Directions with two Cheerios and two football players, I wondered if we’d ever really get to know them, other than Santana, who seemed to be the most prominent. The only thing we’ve learned about Matt Rutherford and Mike Chang (Other Asian) is that they can dance better than Rachel sings, and, well, they have last names. On some levels, that’s more than we can say about Brittany. The flip side there is that while we don’t know the daffy blond’s last name, she too can dance and gets the funniest lines each week. I don’t always have the most popular opinions, as Julia reminds me each and every week (multiple times, actually) in our Glee Live-Blog/Chat, and there’s no doubt that she’s going to hate my views here.
“There are so many lyrics…”
At first, it started with a one liner here or there, usually tagging onto the tail end of a conversation. Heather Morris proved her ability to delivery these lines with such a straight, deadpan face, that Ryan Murphy couldn’t help but give her more and more opportunities. Opportunities that she has capitalized on each and every time.
“So you’re pretty much the only guy in the school that I haven’t made out with because I thought you were capital-G Gay. Now that you’re not, having a perfect record would mean a lot to me.”
Now, not only is she slowly becoming more and more involved with different story lines, she’s been added to the regular cast next season. She’s also proving that she’s got some serious comedic acting chops. Her facial expressions get me rolling every single time.
From my perspective, she’s unseated Sue Sylvester in this department. Sue is a character that needs to be used in moderation, and I think we’ve been getting a little too over-saturated for my tastes in the back half of this first season. Fortunately for you, me, and Morris, Brittany has filled the void, and could soon take over as comedic queen of Glee.
As high as the hype meter got for the “Power of Madonna” episode, next week’s is the one that I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time. It is an episode that should inspire a geekgasm only matched by the disturbance in the Force when Alderaan was destroyed, between the Special Guest Star, the director, and the song list. I can’t wait.
Notes & Quotes:
“Is this the first time we’ve learned that Quinn is living with Puck and his family?”
Did I miss that? What are you talking about?
I watched the episode last night and can now see what the blogs are saying and comment:
“Is this the first time we’ve learned that Quinn is living with Puck and his family?” I wondered the same thing.
For the last few episodes I’ve been wondering: Has Jesse genuinely committed to New Directions? Wasn’t he faking it to manipulate Rachel? Was it one of those lame, “I was faking it at first but then fell in love for real” explanations that we’ve seen done repeatedly in TV and movies? I’m trying to decide if it’s an inconsistency, my attention span or my memory.
Speaking of Jesse (and I did enjoy Finn’s Jesse’s Girl), acknowledging his absence (“On a trip with his friends from Vocal Adrenaline”) somewhat breaks down the fourth wall for me. I interpret it as “[blah blah blah] actor’s contract.” I’d rather they say nothing.
Loved Puck’s rendition of “The Lady is a Tramp” was one of the best numbers of the season.
