Lost in Lost – What happened with Sayid and Desmond?

'The Candidate' was a big episode, but there is one detail that had been bouncing around in my head and has me asking the question: What exactly went down with Sayid and Desmond?

It’s hard to believe that there are only three episodes of Lost left. If you haven’t heard, by the way, the finale got bumped up by another half hour, making it a 2.5 hour extravaganza (that will air on Sunday May 23rd). As excited as I am for tomorrow’s episode, I’m still trying to recover from “The Candidate.” It was a downright blood bath. We have never seen so many characters killed in one fell swoop. It was certainly a shocker of an episode, and really felt like the beginning of the end. From here on out, I think it’s safe to say that anything can happen.

One small detail really stood out for me in last week’s episode and it’s been nagging at me all week. I really want to know what Desmond said to Sayid at the well. I mean, we did see some of their conversation, but I am convinced there was a lot more that we didn’t see. It seemed to me that Sayid knew a lot — like maybe Desmond had told him about the sideways world, about Smokey’s intentions, and about his big master plan.

I’m almost certain that there was more between Sayid and Desmond than we saw. I, for one, thought that Sayid was really gone after Smokey zombified him. I didn’t think there was any coming back from that, but Sayid’s actions on the sub, and even before that, proved otherwise. He really seemed like himself, no “sickness” in sight. Clearly, Desmond had a powerful influence on the man. I really hope that we get to see the rest of their conversation before the end of the series.

Before he died, Sayid told Jack that he was “going to be the one.” What did that mean, exactly? Did Desmond inform him that Jack was destined to take over the island? Or did Sayid just know that Jack was going to be the one who would look for Desmond in the well? I guess that remains to be seen, but it was definitely an interesting moment, and one that I’ve been trying to figure out.

In any case, I was happy with the way that Sayid went out and I’m glad that Desmond was able to push him in the right direction before it was too late (just before).

What was your take on Sayid’s final moments?

I liked his final moments, especially bringing back his tech-wizardry from the first seasons. But I wonder if they’ve just written off his story now, without explaining it. He walked around like a zombie for most of the season. What, exactly, happened to him? How did Desmond stop it? I don’t know if we’ll get any answers here. I’m glad he made a self-sacrifice to save the others, but if that explosion was a way to erase his plot without explaining it, I’ll be disappointed. (Even more so if Frank really got killed there–why exactly has HE been hanging around all season, if not to pilot a plane at some point?)

I’m honestly tired of guessing. It again seems as if they are changing the rules as they are going along. Let’s discuss this once we have more information.
