Army Wives packs an emotional wallop

It's Mother's Day at Fort Marshall, and no one's day seems to be going according to plan. With their spouses off in various places, our Army wives come together to celebrate in their own way.

- Season 4, Episode 5 - "Guns & Roses"

Not a whole lot of plot development on last night’s episode of Army Wives, but talk about a tear-jerker. My wife cried multiple times during the hour, and since I fell asleep near the end and had to re-watch what I missed, she got the chance to cry all over again. I hear the right kind of Mother’s Days are the ones that end in tears.

The main thing I walked away from the episode with was a reminder of the debt that we owe the men and women who risk their lives for us every single day — it’s a debt that we’ll never be able to repay, but one that we should never forget, or overlook. We’re being protected so that we can live in peace and happiness with our loved ones … in doing so, these men and women in uniform are away from theirs.

And those are the ones who are still alive to fight. The visit by Michael’s aunt Edie (Ann-Margret) was a reminder of the fact that many have died, and some are still missing, presumed dead. There are mothers and fathers who’ll never know what happened to their children. There’s nothing that we can do to change that, but we owe them our gratitude for their sacrifice.

As to the specific stories, I think Claudia Joy is going to get caught from behind by Amanda’s death. I know the plot hasn’t really been in circulation of late, but this episode reminded us just how raw that wound will always be. I’ve been looking for her direction this season, and I think Amanda’s death is going to play a part in it.

Pamela and Roland had more of the same-old, as Chase and Joan are still not home. The issues-at-hand are completely dissimilar, but those are the stories that these two will continue to handle. Chase will eventually come back, at which point we’ll get to see Pamela in action. And Roland will continue to struggle until Joan returns.

Aside from the pregnancy, I’m not sure where Roxy and Trevor are. In fact, unless there was some greater significance to the potential recruit that Trevor missed Mother’s Day for, I think it was nothing more than a poorly structured answer to the following question: “We want all the wives to be alone for dinner; how do we get rid of loving Trevor?”

Speaking of which, yesterday I posited that there’s no market for “#1 Mom” junk. Trevor’s always been a poor example for the non-corny, but clearly it’s people like him keeping that market afloat. I stand partially corrected on that issue.

My sensibilities were insulted watching Jeremy celebrate Mother’s Day with Denise. What right does a mother-beater have to celebrate his mother? And how is it that she — and Frank — doesn’t seem to take any issue with the type of person that he is? I hate to say it, because Jeremy’s the only one to blame for the situation, but I always find it hard to keep my high opinion of Denise whenever I see her with her son. He doesn’t deserve her.
