Army Wives – Who set fire to the school in Iraq?

A college trip with Emmalin leads Claudia Joy to consider what her future holds. Trevor's recruit is concerned about his upcoming deployment, while Joan's new orders force her to miss her daughter's first birthday.

- Season 4, Episode 4 - "Be All You Can Be"

It has begun. As of last night’s episode of Army Wives, Pamela’s much-hyped (in my mind) tale of woe and love lost began to unfold on screen, as she sought out advice on what would happen to her and her family were she and Chase to get a divorce. It would seem nothing productive — aside from their marriage being over — but at least now she can be prepared for whatever may come.

And as expected, Brigid Brannagh is extremely strong as a dramatic actor. This is bound to be sad, but it will be all the more poignant and touching because she’ll be the one driving the plot. I do think she did a disservice to herself and to Chase by correcting Katie’s (Chloe J. Taylor) mistaken impression that Chase was being transferred, but I suppose nobody’s perfect.

The birthday party was cute, but also kind of sad. Your first kid’s first birthday is this magical moment that you can’t get back. Any birthday you can celebrate with them is special, and the first for the rest of your kids is, I’m sure, amazing as well. But the first of the first? I feel for Joan that she wasn’t there, but I also feel for Sarah Elizabeth (Roxy said there’s no “H” in her first name but the show’s own site has an “H” everywhere) because her mother will be missing from all the pictures, videos, and collective memories.

I continue to get a bad feeling about what the writers have in store for Claudia Joy. Last night she kicked off a very tired “What am I doing with my life” plot, and is all set to go back and get her JD. I’m not saying she shouldn’t be allowed in the workforce, but just last episode she won The Muriel Spenser Award for best Army spouse, and on behalf of all Army Wives spouses, families, and soldiers, I have to say “What’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” Because I would think that her questioning what she’s doing with her life only serves to diminish all that she does for the three groups of people I mentioned above.

I realize that Claudia Joy is only where she is because of who Michael is. But that didn’t dictate that she become as major a factor in Army life as she has. That’s a result of who she is as a person. Which means she’s not so much serving Michael’s career as she is doing something with her own life. I wasn’t surprised that Michael was supportive of her, but at the same time I expected him to voice some of my own thoughts about what Claudia Joy was inadvertently saying about her work with the Army.

I’m not sure how I feel about Trevor’s story. Clearly Martinez is going to get injured or killed in theater, and soon. The fact that the outcome is so predictable should make me roll my eyes at the plot, but I actually think I’m going to enjoy it (pulled a reverse on you there!). I’ve been wondering why the challenging work that Trevor does as a recruiter has been shoved off-stage this season, so whether or not I’m able to predict what will be, I’m looking forward to watching it play out.

I actually thought it was going to be the girl he recruited last season that was going to die, but Martinez will do just fine.
