Last week, Glee set a pretty high bar with the “Power of Madonna.” All of the music worked, we got some great storylines, and, well, in a word, “Vogue.” You would think that with Lost taking a week off, and a chance to really drive ratings, that they would bring it again this week. Unfortunately, they didn’t. I don’t understand why they didn’t time their return such that “Madonna” ran this week, or, as Keith pointed out in our Live-Blog/Chat, just re-run that episode.
The problem with tonight’s episode, in the humble opinion of this blogger, was the music selection. Anytime you get a guest star like Kristen Chenoweth, you know that she’s going to get a couple solos, and it was great to see more out of Kurt and Mercedes (Though still want Tina, Artie, and Quinn more), but I think the song choice trended a little less contemporary than I would have thought. So, if Julia can play Sue Sylvester (freakingly well, I might add) I’ll try to play Glee music director, and offer what I would have changed.
Song One – “Fire” (The Pointer Sisters): I start with a cheat (because if you know me, you know that I always cheat with my lists). This is the one song I liked. Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison have great chemistry together here, and seemed to have a ton of fun performing this number.
Song Two – “A House is Not a Home” (The 5th Dimension, Dionne Warwick): A beautiful song, don’t get me wrong, but out of place here. If you’re going to own the awkwardness felt by the rest of new directions, then just go all out. My suggestion, “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” – En Vogue
Song Three – “One Less Bell to Ring”/”A House is Not a Home” (Barbara Streisand): It’s tough to beat covering an actual mash-up. As much as Amy Grant and Peter Cetera’s “The Next Time I Fall” makes more sense within the context of the scene, I just don’t care about silly things like that. I want to hear Chenoweth belt out this classic instead. My suggestion: “Unforgettable” – Natalie and Nat King Cole
Song Four – “Beautiful” (Christina Aguilera): I can’t think of a song that so perfectly nails the sentiment than what was chosen, but “Beautiful” has got to be one of the most overplayed songs of my lifetime. So, since nothing works perfect, I think you make it a duet with Kurt, and take this, and change the words a bit. My suggestion: “You’re Beautiful” – James Blunt
Song Five – “Home” (The Wiz): You’ve got to know that there was a little wink wink, nudge nudge going on when you have Glinda from Wicked sing a song from The Wiz. But, as I said before, if you’re going to do something, go all out. We’ve already had one song from Wicked used before, but I say, instead of referencing it, go for it. My suggestion: “For Good” – Wicked
Notes & Quotes:
I agree – the music left a lot to be desired. LOVE the En Vogue suggestion! lol.
I had no problems this week, but then I’m not familiar with half of Madonna’s body of work.
Seriously, “Beautiful” is overplayed, but “You’re Beautiful” isn’t?

I can’t argue too much with you there, but “You’re Beautiful” hasn’t been covered 18 different ways from Sunday, like “Beautiful” has. Or 20 times, if you use Wiki as a jumping off point:

I see, so overcovered is fair, but “You’re Beautiful” is definitely the overplayed one in my experience. It got so that someone turned on the radio randomly, there it was. Or perhaps I just didn’t recognize the different treatments of “Beautiful.”

I guess it might just come down to personal bias, then. I like the one, and am so fraking over the other its not funny.
It seems the only people who loved this episode are old farts who’re into stage-musical-like ballads. If it wasn’t for the chat last night, I would’ve been snoozing through this one.
Also, on the whole thing with Kurt weeping over his dad’s bonding with Finn, I have a hard time feeling for him. Kurt’s dad has mentioned and demonstrated time and again his support for Kurt, going beyond what he enjoys doing so that he can be with his son every step of the way. When has Kurt gone out of his way to do something he doesn’t want to do so he can make time to bond with his dad?
although i didnt recognize some of the songs in this episode, i thought they all fit perfectly well into the story of this ep. though, i totally agree with your desire to have kristin sing a piece from wicked (any would do, please!).
like keith said, it was really hard to feel sad for kurt in this episode. i really liked the character in previous episodes but its sad for me to say that in an episode that he plays a very prominent role in, i disliked him so much.
and yay! quinn finally speaks this half of the season and how how great it was! is it me or does she have the pregnant beauty glow even w/o a real baby?
The entire episode was a “wink wink nudge nudge” to Chenoweth’s career. Aside from The Wiz/Wicked reference Cheno is currently staring in Promises, Promises, and they added in A House is Not A Home for this revival. The April/Will story line also had some fairly loose plot connections to Promises, Promises. Promises opened this past Sunday, I doubt any of this was coincidence.
I will say that the overall song choice was meh. I liked them all, but didn’t love anything. However, the rest of the episode was great for me, so it was pretty easy to overlook.
Come to think of it, the song selection for the first Cheno episode wasn’t the greatest either. Why are they so underusing Cheno!
This episode was sooooo boring. Normally, I enjoy the songs, but this week I couldn’t wait for them to be over. Argh.
