American Idol – Where was the inspiration?

There was more inspiration in the bottom of my sock drawer then there was in the entire 'Idol' telecast.

- Season 9, Episode 32 - "The Top 7 Perform Inspirational Songs"

Ladies and Gentlemen of the American Idol television viewing audience: Please allow us to introduce you to the mentor for the evening, Alicia Keys.

And audience?  Do us all a favor and try to stay awake. (The enthusiasm exuding from Ms. Keys was so incredibly overwhelming, I could barely keep my spine from slouching.)

(Pssssssssssst Idol Powers That Be:  Seriously — if a guest mentor is in need of a Monster or a 5 Hour Energy or a Red Bull, have one handy, ‘kay? Even if they don’t ask for it.)

Inspirational tunes were the order of the evening. But there wasn’t much to get inspirationally jiggy, let me tell you. Work with me here, guys — there were only two contestants worth their salt tonight:

  • Casey James, “Don’t Stop” —  Oh, please, do. Do stop, Casey. Because that opening song was just blurgh. Same old same old same old same old. Get it? Got it? Good.
  • Lee DeWyze, “The Boxer” — What a perfect song for Lee to have tackled. But that’s the wrong word. The dude didn’t tackle it; he took it and molded it and crafted it to his very own. That was sung kinda chunky, with the Lee DeWyze heft and hunk. As soon as I heard the first few seconds, I “wowed” myself. I was actually taken by Lee’s take on the tune. (See spiffy video below.)
  • Tim Urban, “Better Days” — Holy crap. I about fell asleep during the first few syllables, Tim. Wake the frak up, dude. Inject some life in the tune. Idol PTB? That 5 hour energy I know you have on ice … over here! Quick! Tim: Emote for Pete’s sake! Kick yourself! Do something … anything … anything resembling a performance for this song. Randy said it was just “okay.” He was being kind. It wasn’t even that.
  • Aaron Kelly, “I Believe I Can Fly” —  You know the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you rub your bare butt on shag carpet? Feels good doesn’t it? And then, soon thereafter, you realize you’ve rubbed so much, you’ve rug-burned your tuckus? (What?!? No one does this but me…?!?) Yep. That’s the perfect summation of this song. It seemed to have felt good, but it resulted in hurt at the very end. Simply rug burny. And Simon? Thank you … thank you for justifying what I thought I heard in you stating “…. if I heard that on the radio, I would have turned it off in ten seconds.” Not anywhere near as colorful as “rug-burny”, but … well … you know …..
  • Siobhan Magnus, “When You Believe” —  Y’know … there are times with Siobhan takes you by the hand and drags you up on stage with her and makes you understand what she’s doing … and then there’s Siobhan on sleepy pills. The Siobhan during this evening’s telecast was the latter. Nigh-night, Siobhan … nigh-night.
  • Michael Lynche, “Hero” — Man the nose spray … !!! It was nasally goodness coming from Big Mike tonight. It did not work. Dare I say: It was wafty. Complete with a big thunk at the end.
  • Crystal Bowersox, “People Get Ready” — MommaSox.  Without instrumentation. Can her voice alone carry her through a performance? Would her dreads get in the way? Would she call in the reserves (or her new-found friends, “The High Heels”) to assist in her effort? No. No, she wouldn’t. She did okay all on her own. And: It was the only inspirational performance of the evening … more strikingly so in that it was supposed to be an evening of inspirational songs. (See Crystal make her mark in the video below.)

So … the culmination of Inspirational Week and Idol Gives Back will result in someone other than Lee and Crystal being ousted. Goes without saying. Like Aaron or Timbo.

A completely boring, dull, ho-hum, slow, tedious and uninteresting Idol episode. There was no need for a nightcap before bed this evening, folks. It just wasn’t necessary.

Bowersox had me weeping. Just give her the title and call the season over already.

I am on the Lee train. He doesn’t have a prayer against Crystal, but just the same.
*passes Michael some ointment for his butt burn*

Oh and Big Mike Lynche … tell me, how can someone be fat and yet muscular-like at the same time? Pick one!

You do know dogs love to scoot across the shag carpeting to relieve their anal gland itch?

Wow, Tara…you took the words out of my head with Mike Lynch and that spare tire ’round the middle section. Looks more like he drank not only the 6 pack but ate his way through the entire Idol season.

Right now the two front runners are most definitely Crystal and Lee. Glad to see Lee coming out of the shadows. But I really do like Siobhan…yes, even with her butterflies of which she must have borrowed the the SD Wild Animal park exhibit.

Mikki, maybe after a contestant gets kicked off, they feed them to Big Mike. Really, have you seen DiDi lately?

Hmmmm, you just might have a point Tara. Idol probably went way over their food budget feeding big Mike. Poor Didi…probably not more then hors d’oeuvres for him.

OH EM GEE ya had me at rug-burned and rug-burny!!!!

The only stand ouf for me, once again AND no great surprise – was Crystal….I was crying half way thru…and when she hit the end they tears were ginormous. I knew when they all appeared on stage at the beginning she was gonna do something awe inspiring. I’m with BSGfan, just give her the title and put us all out of our misery – she can just perform the rest of the season, with a little bit of Casey eye-candiness tossed in on the side.

Siobhan is an odd duck, but for some reason I really like her, maybe cuz I’m kinda quirky, or maybe that should be quacky, whatever, I like her, but she wont win.

Poor Big Mike, he tries, but the fire from the early part of the season just aint there.

Who’s goin home, my hope is Tim or Aaron, but the damn teen vote will likely keep em both in longer. COME ON OLD LADY VOTERS just keep tossing ALL your votes at Crystal…forget that smarmy stuff of wanting to keep a fave in longer….let’s git er done shall we!!!!!

Well, I love your write up (as usual) and agree with you for the most part. I’ve always liked Crystal but not much of a Lee fan….don’t really know why though?!? However, the best part of it all was clicking on your link to the “Drama Button”….it’s so you!! :D

Every time I see Big Mike playing guitar I wonder how he can do it. I mean, he’s HUGE! Anyhoodle, I agree that last night pointed out how out of his league Tim is. I thought Aaron hit the notes but he didn’t Sing the song. Especially since it’s an overdone song. meh.

I thought Lee was great. And Crystal finally seemed genuine.

Rug-burny???? LOL. You are just too much!

I agree we will see Aaron or Tim gone tonight. Hopefully there isn’t a surprise where no one will go and then 2 go next week!

I pretty much agreed with your overview of everyone. Crystal was my favorite! As usual!

I didn’t get to view fresh off the farm thanks to having work to commit. However, I did watch the performances this morning on youtube. Yep. I welled up when Crystal did — and I did again when she stated why she cried. Best moment of the evening? Using Ryan’s pocket-kerchief. Awe=some!

Lee, lay off the Chap-Stik — but you did a song that few would tackle, me thinks. I dug it. He wasn’t pitch perfect, but I give the boy props for making twinkly eyes at the camera (or maybe that was just reflection from his shiny lips.)

:)

…… I want to do bad things to Lee… *blush* That was fantastic! He’s my guy and has been from the start.

Momma Sox….. nobody is going to beat this girl. THANK GOD for some inspiration on Inspriational night. You go girl….. the world is your oyster!

*might I add I love Siobhan in a motherly sort of way because I’ve raised a daughter just like her?* Hang in little girl….
