Saturday Night Live – Ryan Phillippe/Ke$ha

Flip Flop, Zig Zag, Father Swimcoach Scoutmaster, neon musical numbers, and an uncomfortable Breakfast at Tiffany's ... with beer. All in a night's work for 'SNL.' But where was MacGruber?

- Season 35, Episode 19 - "Ryan Phillippe/Ke$ha"

Cold Open: Larry King Live — You know, I feel bad for Iceland. The only two somewhat famous things it has coming from it are Bjork and volcano ash. Always love Hader’s Richard Branson.

Monologue: Ryan Phillippe — Note to NBC: do NOT make a movie about the Target lady. Thank you. Now, What’s Up With That … now we’re talkin’. Nothing like getting What’s Up With That-bombed!

Broadview Security — Repeat commercial from last month. Still, it’s worthy of repeating.

Today Sponge Women’s Weightlifting Championship — This sketch is repeating too often methinks. Every time I see it starting, I hope it’ll have something new and fresh … but it never does. It’s the same thing every time.

Hip Hop Kids — Damn if they didn’t do an awesome Fat Albert parody here. I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Flip Flop tell Zig Zag he got served again.

SNL Digital Short: “Oh, hey bro!” — A pretty good sketch, though the one later within the Underground Rock Minute would’ve served better as a Digital Short. The ending of this one was … confusing.

Mort Mort Feingold: Accountant for the Stars — Here we go again with unnecessary theme songs. I didn’t really care for this sketch too much, so I hope that theme song isn’t spelling out that it will be back again.

Shake Weight Commercial DVD — Hey pink tank-top girl, nice dynamic inertia! Uh … if you want to see what commercial they’re talking about, here it is:

Musical Guest: Ke$ha — Never heard of her before, but to me it sounded like slutty drunken sorority girl music. Oh, and the outfits in the first number looked like a couple of camels were wearing them, if you catch my drift.

Weekend Update — I love Hader’s James Carville, and something tells me I should sense a recurring character in the creepy Father Swimcoach Scoutmaster.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s — We’ve seen this kind of sketch before, and it’s one of my favorites. I wonder how many Obama haters got pissy at how this one ended, though.

Teen Talk — We saw a sketch like this once before, and it’s definitely funny. I wish I knew if this was based on something that happened on a real talk show because I just have to see a tape of that.

I Got This! – For as incredibly simple and silly as this was, it actually worked. It fell a bit flat in the end, but it wasn’t half bad!

Underground Rock Minute — Too bad that, with DJ Supersoak meeting his demise at the end of this sketch, that probably spells the end of seeing these sketches again. The first one was a riot. The song in this one had some funny stuff for sure.

The funniest stuff comes from real life, and I cannot believe that Shake Weight commercial is real! They really riffed off that one with perfection .. how could you leave that one alone?

I had heard of Ke$ha before last night. So needless to say I had low expectations of her. She didn’t even meet those extremely low expectations. Both performances were just one big WTF. The alien comment, the body paint, and astronaut dancers made it seem like she is a crappy imitation of Lady Gaga. And my Gaga tolerance is low so Ke$ha was just annoying.

The Shake Weight and Underground Rock Minute were great. Tea Party sketch was amusing too for the priest comment. Rest wasn’t really that funny to me.

Wow, Keith, I bet I’m a lot older than you and I know who Ke$sha is! She definitely appeals to a certain demographic, she’s had two hit songs from her debut album with a third now hitting the airwaves, she’s touring with Rihanna, she must be doing something right. I can’t say I’m a huge fan because all of her music does sound the same – like, yes, a drunk frat – but her performances on the show were not bad at all. She didn’t appeal to you, or all the others who don’t like her, but she put on a good show. One of the few musical guests I didn’t fast forward through.

Obviously Elton John’s wardrobe designer from the 70’s has gotten a few new gigs lately. I’m waiting to see who dresses up like a giant duck next. My bet is on Glambert.
