How I Met Your Mother – The one Super Bowl commercial that worked

My favorite [of Barney's "suitors"] was “Hot Chick,” in case you're wondering, but only by name. Her bad leg was just kinda freaky.

- Season 5, Episode 15 - "Rabbit or Duck"

So, apparently, yesterday, there was this game on or something, and there were commercials that were particularly special. OK, I kid, I’m a huge football fan, but I think I need to weigh in on the fact that the commercials were a bit lacking this year. I was kind of disappointed in the How I Met Your Mother bit, with Barney in the audience with his phone number on a poster. The message when you called (because, of course we called) wasn’t particularly funny. The mistake I made was not trusting in showrunners Bays and Thomas to bring it home by integrating into this week’s episode.

Barney vs. the scores of women that called after the big game lead to some nice hi-jinks (My favorite, was “Hot Chick,” in case you’re wondering, but only by name. Her bad leg was just kinda freaky). Barney must have overestimated the number of fans that tuned in to watch the Saints upset the Colts. He must have logically assumed all of Louisiana was on Bourbon Street and couldn’t get a phone line out (Seriously … Did you try calling anyone in New Orleans last night?).  Too bad for Barney, because not even he could handle the amount of calls coming in (despite Teds … erm … “help”).

What I wasn’t sold on, however, is the whole Don/Robin storyline. I liked the whole duck/rabbit analogy, though probably more for the fight at MacLaren’s, but we’re several weeks in with Don, and I don’t like him. Not even the Naked Man could raise his stock in my eyes. Robin deserves better, even if that better is Barney (because you can count me as the one guy on the planet that actually liked that pairing).

Notes & Quotes:

  • Ranjit!!!
  • “Robin, you’re going to marry this guy so fricking hard. Right in the butt.”
  • “What would your viewer think?”
  • What is up with Barney’s ringtone?
  • “I can’t do that Ted. I just can’t hook up with a girl if there is a hotter girl out there with whom Up can be Hooked.”
  • Teddy Westside? Really?
  • I don’t know where I come down on the whole Duck vs. Rabbit thing, but I think Ranjit had the last (or at least best) word.
  • I love any use of the term “lawyered.”
  • “And wait, this is the best part, I’ve been working on this for a while … I’ll duck out.”
  • “Yeah, because I would never … standards.” Sure, Robin, whatever you say.
  • “Blah blah.” “Committed.” “Marriage?” “Bellview.”
  • Ranjit can knit!

This was a so-so episode for me.

It felt like that duck vs rabbit argument came about after the writers figured out the Donald Duck/Don connection, because I just don’t see the appeal of ducks. And really not all the arguments “for” ducks were right– Goose down is far more commonly used than duck and is a lot better, plus rabbit fur of course would be warmer and softer (hypothetically speaking, PETA people please don’t take this as anything more than abstract analysis).

It’s sad that Marshall conceded, he should have just simply put it as: Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck?

I did like the call back to the Naked Man bit.

Also, it was good to see Ranjit again.

As for Barney and his magic cum “cursed” phone– by the time he got to “hot chick” I was just rolling my eyes and thinking just DO her already!

Totally agree with you about the ringtone and definitely that Robin and Barney were a great pairing… it’s a shame the writers didn’t let it work out.
