Lost in Lost – Some of the biggest questions for the final season

It’s almost here folks, and it can’t come soon enough! The premiere of the final season of Lost is happening next Tuesday! Get excited (as if you weren’t already). We’ll actually have a live-blog/chat during the episode, so be sure to tune in for that.

In anticipation of this momentous event, I thought it would be a good idea to go over some the biggest open questions from the end of last season. As you may know, there are no shortage of questions hungry to be answered. Of course, whether or not the writers choose to wrap everything up has yet to be seen. I have a feeling that at least some of the events of the series are going to be left open to interpretation.

Here are the biggest questions, as I see them:

  • Were the Losties successful in changing the future/past? The final minutes of last year’s finale were left ambiguous, to say the least. Some people aren’t even convinced that Juliet set off “Jughead” in the closing moments. Assuming that she did, we don’t know what the consequences are. Was the future changed? Did flight 815 really not crash on the island? If it didn’t, what the heck is the final season going to look like?
  • Who is in control of John Locke’s body? In the final episode, a lot of the mystery surrounding Jacob was revealed (though plenty still remains). Another enigmatic figure was introduced, though, and we don’t even know his name. It was clear that this man in black was Jacob’s enemy and is in control of Locke’s body. What his intentions are and who he is exactly remain a mystery.
  • What are the motivations of Ilana and her crew? Ilana and the other members of her group seem to be wholly separate from The Others — or at least that was the impression that I got — yet they both seem to revere Jacob. We saw that Jacob had even visited Ilana off island. My theory is that Jacob really didn’t have any contact with The Others, and that they were speaking with the man in black. I think it was he who was trapped in “Jacob’s cabin,” as we saw how all of his actions led to Locke becoming the leader and eventually killing Jacob. It was all very clever.
  • What does Richard know, and whose side is he on? Richard has been around for a long time, as we saw last season, and has been with The Others for that whole time. This raises some interesting questions. How much does Richard know about the man in black? Was he aware of his plan? Was Richard helping? Or, did Richard truly believe that he was leading Jacob’s people over the years? Richard is one character I’m going to be keeping a close eye on in the new season.
  • What roles do Desmond and Widmore have to play in the end game? Charles Widmore has been an important figure for a good portion of Lost, as has served as a great antagonist for Ben. With events seemingly coming to a head on the island, I have to wonder if we have seen the last of Widmore. Is he going to end up back on the island somehow? Does he have a role to play off island? Desmond is in a similar situation. It seems like his story was wrapped up last season, and as I’ve said before, I would prefer it if the show didn’t mess with his happy ending.

Those are the biggest questions in my head right now, what are you thinking about as the final season begins?

Could it be that the others have been deceived all this time into thinking they were with Jacob but in truth, were following Jacob’s nemesis/FLocke?

Something tells me I am missing something here that would disprove that theory, but the idea keeps popping into my head.
