Is there an excuse for how Izzie has acted?

- Season 6, Episode 9 - "New History"

Kim Raver as Dr. Teddy Altman

This week’s episode of Grey’s saw the return of both Meredith and Izzie. Not that Meredith actually went anywhere, but her return to work. Where the show’s namesake had her quasi-absence explained away by a medical procedure, Izzie just kind of disappeared. I don’t care how you, me, or Izzie tries to spin things … her leaving her friends and her husband with no contact was just a plain crappy thing to do.

She got fired. I get it. While I’m sure not everyone out there has experienced that exact barrel of fun, I’m sure, in this economy, we can all identify with what that could feel like. But is it an excuse for how she acted? The answer is a resounding hell no. The character that has defined empathy on this show from the first episode acting like this, with her placing blame on Karev’s shoulders that frankly doesn’t belong there, makes so little sense it’s not funny.

Her only true saving grace this episode was the catalyst for her return. Speaking of identifying with Izzie tonight, I’ve had that teacher, and I’ve lost that teacher. Izzie standing up for her high school science teacher, especially with the Chief, had me begrudgingly respecting her actions, even if just those that brought her home.

I really expected more drama with the introduction of Kim Raver’s character. Don’t get me wrong, I like that Cristina now has the teacher she so desperately needed, but I truly thought it would take an episode or two before they got on the same page. But, I guess the drama is more on Hunt’s side, eh?

What are your thoughts on Dr. Altman? Think she will/should stick around?

  • “I’ve never heard of you either, so I guess that makes us even.”
  • “Did it ever occur to you that you might be the problem?”
  • I like Meredith’s wanting to get back to the “five seconds of happy”
  • The best scene of the night included five people that weren’t members of the original cast … already by the sixth season? How often does that happen?
  • An army doc named Altman? A shout out to the M*A*S*H movie?
  • I don’t think that we needed the montage to be reminded that the Chief is an alcoholic, or to let us know that he’s been drinking again for a while … but at least we now have an excuse for the way he’s been acting
