The Middle; Modern Family; South Park – In that order

The Middle

A long night of TV, and I didn’t even fit in everything I’d normally want to watch, meaning Glee isn’t included this week. I’ve been a lot more excited lately to see the shows I did watch last night:

The Middle — First of all, what I really appreciate about this show is how things pretty much picked right up where we left off. The quirks of the Heck family that we were introduced to last week are all still very much intact. Brick still talks to his imaginary friend. Axl still walks around the house in his underwear. Mike is still brutally honest.

I’m still reminded of Malcom in the Middle with this show, but what I’m liking more is how the kids aren’t made out to be huge pains in the ass. This really is a good family, even though they have their quirks. Unlike with Malcolm’s family, this is a family that’s likable.

Modern Family — Sadly, I had to place this second, as it’s just not fully retaining the humor that was seen in the extremely strong pilot episode. It still has its laugh-out-loud moments, but it’s no longer a near constant stream of comedy, with lots of hidden jokes that take multiple viewings to find them all. Best quote from the episode:

Phil: “What happens if you turn the remote off then on real quick?”
Jay: “Yeah, you would’ve made a great pilot.”

South Park — It’s crazy how this show can offend one group of people, yet entertain the other, episode to episode. Case in point: Chipotlaway. As I’m laughing at that whole bit, even as disgusting as I knew it to be, Deb gave me that look of “you’re insane” before leaving the room. I thought maybe I was alone on finding that funny, but this morning it’s one of our top trending search topics. Welcome, fellow disgusting people! We’ll hold our first “South Park‘s gross stuff is funny” support group meeting next week.

Here’s what else I watched that didn’t make the cut: Cougar Town, Ghost Hunters, and Secret Girlfriend. Hey, don’t kill me — maybe it was just my mood last night.
