Tonight’s episode of Psych made my laugh out loud, as usual, but there were also some points that I’ve noticed as a pattern this season, and it’s all good.
Even though it’s a funny show, Psych‘s crimes have been getting more violent and serious this season. I know murder is serious, and that’s primarily what the crimes have been in the past, but we didn’t see the murders, just investigated them after the fact. We got to see Diddle being brutally strangled, and Shawn and Gus were in real danger when they were caught by the drug lord. It adds a greater element of realism and excitement for the viewer, and really plays off the funny stuff nicely.
And the funny stuff has been elevated to a new level this season. They always did crazy things with their intros and themes, but this season’s Bollywood, Exorcist shout-out and now the boy bands theme have been so much fun. If you’re fast-forwarding through the intro, stop that innane behavior immediately because you’re missing out. Boyz II Men actually recorded their own version of the intro this week to celebrate the boy band theme of the episode, and that’s not the only time Psych has fiddled around with the intro.
Finally, there’s always been some fun back-and-forth shout-outs between The Mentalist and Psych. In this week’s The Mentalist, Keith points out that finally someone had the good sense to tell Jane that he isn’t a cop and shouldn’t be treated like he’s one. Funnily enough, Lassiter tells Shawn the same thing this week. “You are not a cop, Spencer, and you never will be.” Of course, Shawn’s reaction is all fun and games, starkly pointing out the contrast to The Mentalist.
