I don’t know whose idea it was, but that was one of the funniest cold opens in the history of The Office … and that’s a really tough get. Only Michael would think to seek colonoscopy advice from The Office’s resident gay man, Oscar. Wow.
“In your experience, what should I be expecting … in terms of sensation?” – Michael
“Should I have a safe word?” – Michael
Wow.
David (Andy Buckley) and Jim’s meeting was the central theme tonight, but it was Dwight and Toby who stole the show. Shouldn’t they have been working? Instead, they teamed up to investigate Darryl’s workers’ comp claim. Dwight’s teamed up with so many people over the life of The Office — he’s at his top form when it’s Michael, but as a partner, Jim wins every time. Toby worked, but he’s a bit of a weak character for a domineering personality like Dwight. Really funny, but not my first choice. And what happened to Dwight and his buddy Andy this week?
We got some solid Creed in as well, checking in with Michael as the latter spied on Jim and David. Yeah, Creed, it does make more sense that they’d be discussing Michael, as opposed to you. Thanks for checking, though!
The word’s already been out, but we learned on tonight’s show that Jim and Pam are to be wed at Niagara Falls. Very cheesy, but okay. I’m thinking that the build-up to this might be a bit annoying. Yes, people find them cute, but did you notice how they didn’t actually spend any time together tonight? So is the idea of them cute, or is it cute to actually watch them interact? I think the baby, too, will give us a lot of Pam and Jim, but separately, as Jim tries to build a stable life for them, and Pam plans and plans, as we saw tonight. What ever happened to their face-to-face flirting?
Okay, okay, I’m getting to the big reveal. So, while I can’t even imagine how anyone would think promoting Michael was a smart idea, his workload could not have expanded enough to need two people to complete it. If the company’s struggling to make money in this economy, they need more salesmen, not less. Maybe Michael could be “co-manager” in charge of — i.e. working actively in — sales, while Jim could be “co-manager” in charge of really running the branch. Yes, it sounded like that a bit anyway, but unless you spell it out for Michael…. Personally, I’d not promote Jim just because he suggested giving Michael more responsibility, but maybe there’s too much business sense in that decision. Who knows. Big picture, though, it’s a cool idea. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
Quotes aplenty this week, including the below:
“I think the pregnancy really brought us together.” – Pam to Michael, in response to whether or not she and Jim were close
“Please don’t talk about my breast milk.” – Pam to Michael … does it even need a set-up?
And paraphrasing Michael to David, on Jim:
“Jim is like Big Bird; tall, yellow, very nice … Big Bird doesn’t make the tough decisions. If I were to put someone in charge, I would put Bert in charge. Or one of the adults.”
