Um, where are the celebrities in I’m a Celebrity?

heidispencer150Ooooo … I am sooo excited! Last Friday NBC announced a partial lineup for its new summer reality series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here. The program is premiering June 1st and will run pretty much every weekday night until the end of June. So, that will give me plenty of opportunities to watch my favorite celebrities compete against each other in a Survivor-like game. Now, let me just pop open another browser and read who … will … be … play-ing….

Uh, who the hell are these people?

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from The Hills? “Former” wrestler Torrie Wilson? “Former” NBA player John Salley?

Sanjaya? They brought freaking Sanjaya into this show? Holy crap! What a train wreck! Maybe they need to call this I Was Possibly a Celebrity Once…Get Me Some More Publicity.

How pathetic. I know I shouldn’t be, but I’m totally shocked at what studios and networks consider a celebrity these days. I wouldn’t even consider any of these people to be D-list stars like Kathy Griffin, whose really a ‘C’ or ‘B-‘ star anyway. These folks are well into lower half of letters when it comes to celebrity status.

The inclusion of Stephen Baldwin and Janice Dickinson to the cast doesn’t really help. These two are now the ‘go to’ people when you need to fill slots in reality programs. If they were this “famous” in the ’70s and early ’80s  they would have appeared on every single celebrity game show ever produced. Sort of like Soupy Sales and Betty White — except Soupy and Betty were much more entertaining.

What’s most galling here is that NBC (short for “No Broadcast Content”) thinks that viewers are going to tune in to this crapfest for nearly 17 continuous nights (minus Fridays and weekends, which will be reserved for scraping the memory of this show out of our brains). Maybe they have a certain sense of disaster, which is why they’re pairing up with MTV to air I’m a Celebrity. The former music video channel will air a marathon of the previous week’s shows for The Hills crowd that has probably never even heard of NBC.

If this is where the future of NBC programming will be heading I say fire everyone, shut it all down, and let Jay Leno handle the entertainment from sunup to sundown. At least will get something interesting to come out of that compared to the poop that is I’m a Celebrity.

Ugh… even the British version didn’t have “celebrities” so at least NBC is keeping it close to the original.

And Janice Dickinson was on the UK version, so does that give her an advantage?!

At least the ABC version had some pseudo-celebs that people had actually heard of! But with Heidi and Spencer trapped in Mexico and the swine flu sweeping the globe, perhaps this crapfest will be scrapped altogether!
