Lost – Jack gets put in his place; more questions are raised

LostDid everyone else enjoy that verbal smackdown that Sawyer gave Jack at the end of this episode as much as I did? It was a long time coming, and it was brilliant! It was about time someone called Jack out for what he truly is: a knee-jerk reactionary egomaniac. Even now that he’s back on the island, having a nervous breakdown trying to get people back there with him, he has the nerve to try to defend himself by saying that his actions got him off the island. What a grade A d-bag. I was a little disappointed that Jack didn’t seem to mind taking his spanking. In fact, he looked a little relieved that someone else was stepping to the plate as the leader.

I had been wondering about where Sayid ended up during the plane crash, and we got the answer to that question in this episode. The question now becomes what is going to happen to him? He’s currently rotting in the Dharma prison as a hostile, with young Ben bringing him sandwiches. I’m sure little Ben is hoping that Sayid is there to take him away to become leader of the hostiles. Not yet, Ben, not yet.

That wasn’t the only question raised in this episode though. It would seem that our mad scientist friend, Daniel Faraday, is nowhere to be seen in 1977. Has he fled the Dharma Initiative? Is he dead? We saw in the premiere that he was definitely a part of the DI at some point, working on the construction of the Orchid station. I think that, perhaps, with all his time travel experimentation background, he was able to harness the power of the Orchid and escape from 1977. I wonder if he’s back on the island in present day now, ready to help Sun.

That’s the final question from this episode: is Sun going to find a way back to 1977? She and Frank got an uber-creepy visit from Christian, who informed them that they had a “long journey” ahead. Is that long journey going to take them to the Orchid? To 1977? Somewhere else?

Time will tell.

I’m too lazy to go back to the premier and look at the date stamp on when we saw Faraday with the DI.

I’m hoping that the Losties get back to the present time instead of Sun going back.

Methinks lil’ Ben has some stuff to be worrying about from Sayid ;)

Dorv, there was no time stamp on the scene with Chang and Daniel.

“I was a little disappointed that Jack didn’t seem to mind taking his spanking. In fact, he looked a little relieved that someone else was stepping to the plate as the leader.”

His concession to Sawyer seemed reasonable when you consider that Jack never really wanted to be leader in the first place, and after everyone cast him as the de facto decision maker, they spent a great deal of time second guessing almost every choice he’d make and going off to do whatever they wanted anyway.

Still, considering that things have gotten more complicated and more variables have been added, I’m skeptical that Sawyer’s stint as leader is going to continue going so much more smoothly than Jack’s did.

I really just wanted to see Jack in pain, does that make me a bad person”

Arguably, we’ve been seeing Jack suffer one way or another for over 4 seasons.

Sawyer’s just pouring more salt in the wounds, and with a little too much relish.

I was kinda hoping the baby would be Goodwin just to see Juliet’s reaction. And I’m surprised Jack didn’t mention he came back to save Sawyer and the rest of them. Next week looks good. I’m hoping for a catfight with Juliet and Kate.

So did anyone catch what job Kate got?

March 19, 2009 at 3:55 AM

Motor Pool … like Juliet

Did anyone catch that person behind Christian when they were inside the house? It was someone with blonde hair, we couldn’t figure it out, but I have to think it was Claire. It was pretty creepy.

So awesome. Head over to DarkUFO for some great screencaps. Very creepy. I figure it has to be Claire.

At least we know why they built a runway … so they could land the 737 on it

Just a little nitpick – Sayid and the others who returned to 1977 weren’t in a plane crash. They vanished from the plane in a burst of light. My question is why wasn’t Sun taken since she was one of the Oceanic 6 who were supposed to all return to the island together. And is Locke’s body still on the plane the landed on the beach runway or did the casket also end up somewhere in the jungle in 1977?

March 19, 2009 at 12:46 PM

That’s not a nitpick, its a good question. Sayid, Kate, Jack, and Hurley moved to the past, where as Sun (Frank and Ben) did not. I’m sure there’s a reason, and I look forward to an explanation.

March 19, 2009 at 1:08 PM

They vanished during the plane crash, however, that was all I was saying.

March 19, 2009 at 3:12 PM

No Bob, I was talking to Chuck… I think his nitpick is actually a very good question that I look forward to being answered :)

Considering we saw Locke interacting with the other Ajira plane “landing” survivors a few episodes back, it’s safe to say that his body stayed in the present-day, and is no longer in the coffin. Although I really don’t understand why those scenes were shown out of sequence with these (usually there’s a timeshift or flashback involved). The best I can figure is that they occur AFTER what we saw last night, since the “injured” were in a building, and in last night’s show, they had only just spotted the buildings. (And Ben was unconscious with the “injured” due to Sun’s oar-whacking, not landing injuries.)

March 19, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Of course those events took place after what we saw last night. Caesar even told Locke that the pilot and some chick took off in a boat with the passenger manifest.

Lost has often played scenes out of sequential order even before we started time jumping that have nothing to do with normal flashbacks. Think about the season opener with Chang and Daniel at the Orchid. Or Juliet in New Otherton right before 815 crashed.

March 19, 2009 at 6:42 PM

I don’t know if New Otherton is yours, or if its been around for a while, but lemme tell you, its gonna stick with me :)

March 19, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Can’t take credit for that. I’m pretty sure Sawyer coined that on the show along time ago.

March 19, 2009 at 1:06 PM

The only difference that I can think of between Sun and the others is that Sun never got a visit from “Jeremy Bentham.” Then again, Ben did and he didn’t disappear in a flash of white light, so I don’t think it really holds any water.

March 19, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Not true Bob. Locke never visited Ben. Ben tracked, followed, killed Abbadon and then visited Locke.

Semantic difference to be sure, but the show did make a point of showing that to us.

March 19, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Bob and Akbar have made a great connection… Locke visited the Losties that made the jump, and didn’t (at least yet to our knowledge) any on the plane that didn’t make the jump.

March 19, 2009 at 4:51 PM

It truly is the only point of causality between them right now. If Walt got on 316… he would be in 77. Man… now I wished he did come.

March 19, 2009 at 4:45 PM

I’m sorry for Sawyer that Kate is back in his life.
How long before someone needs a good spinal surgeon and only the “workman” can help?

March 19, 2009 at 4:55 PM

This is all speculation:

Based on the preview… I am guessing a certain young Dharma member is gonna need a doc real quick after Sayid shoots them. And I am guessing Jack actually wont step up to help. Enter Juliet to once again medically save the day…. and sync back up to her initial appearance with the Others.

Numerous points in this season have been all about connecting the dots with what we have seen before. I feel this one is about to come full circle.

In the early episode. We saw the losties flash to the time after the 316 flight crash on the island. They find the water of AJRA.But when did the 316 flight get to the island is a question.
