When Kevin McKidd showed up at Seattle Grace and started kicking butt and taking names, I thought great, here’s a guy who’s a man’s man. A guy who’s not afraid to take charge and do what’s necessary to save lives. A guy who grabs a girl and kisses her, just because he feels like it. A guy who’s seen it all, and isn’t afraid to use his worldly knowledge to save lives. A guy who’s not afraid to say what he feels, even if it’s not the most appropriate thing at that particular moment. A guy who stitches his own wounds and doesn’t cry like a baby while doing it. A guy who’s a formidable mate for the similarly blunt and relationship-challenged Cristina.
But could my Major McBadass possibly be turning soft? In last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, he gets knock-down drunk because he’s afraid to go on a date with Cristina. Then when he shows up at her door, he stinks like liquor, so she makes him take a shower. He apparently loses his mind and gets in the shower fully clothed. Then he starts rambling about his “best surgery ever,” a question Cristina asked him earlier on the advice of one of her less-blunt co-workers.
Yes, I get that the writers are trying to show a multi-layered guy who’s got a lot of baggage and doesn’t always know how to express it and blah blah blah. Frankly, I don’t want that from him. His name is Major McBadass, for god sakes, not Major McSoftie. We need at least ONE person on this show who isn’t always whining about one thing or another in their life.
Don’t we? Do you agree? Or do you like the multi-layered McBadass?

I think you’re out of luck, Jane. Did you notice that since he arrived the personality of Derek has changed a bit? He’s not in the least bit simpy.
Additionally, since the Hahn/Callie thing, McSteamy is less steamy. He’s no longer a womanizer who enjoys sex, but he’s always wanting approval and is into Mer’s little sister – for real!
Alex is, currently, the only real man on the show. I liked him briefly at the beginning, then he got on my nerves (a lot). He’s quickly becoming my favorite character. And, if the Denny is my head story is part of that, I’m all for that particular audience loser.
Modwild….I was thinking you were a fan of BSG. If so I would love to hear your take on Friday’s episode over on the Battlestar blog. (Sorry if I’m butting in on this blog subject).
I think all characters are evolving and showing their true colors (Cristina is not a very good friend, Meredith is not so immature and can have a relationship, Dereks is not Mcperfect he has prejudices, McSteamy has a little heart and can fall for someone, Karev actually cares for someone more than he cares for himself)… so I think it’s only normal that we see Owen changing too, or showing his other side. No one is that confident and brutal without a story to tell. The guy is Mcarmy but the Army life is also terrible and hard and people that have been in the war have scars and consequences, they suffer, they have been in hell so I am happy that they show that – plus I think it makes him more attractive. We already know he can do badass, now I want to see a bit more tenderness in him. I was getting tired of his ‘hot-cold’ like Cristina said and his being aggressive with everyone and everything around him. He needs to calm down and talk his problems – that doesn’t make him less ‘manly’. And I’m sorry to tell you but someone that stitches up his own wounds and doesn’t cry/feel pain is not ‘cool’ – I don’t find that necessary in a man to find him a MAN. Please this is chauvinist propaganda and anti-feelings, why do we assume that men can’t be soft or have a soul and problems or cry? It’s the 21st century, not the Dark Ages!
Seriously! It’s pretty ridiculous to think that its ok to say that a man is only a “real man” if he doesn’t cry or show his feelings, and if someone said a woman is only a “real woman” if she exhibits such stereotypical traits everyone would be up in arms.
Also, I think its pretty hot that he’s Major McBadAss with everyone else, but with Christina he can open up more.
