Tonight on the tube: The Starter Wife ends, Christmas specials

Spotlight Show of the Night

The Flight Before Christmas (CBS, 9:00 p.m./8:00 p.m. Central) – All right now. I’m going to keep hoping that these new Christmas specials are going to be good. Eventually one of them has to be, right? This one features Norm McDonald and Emma Roberts. I’ve always liked McDonald and his particular vocal sound works well in animation. The story is a little bizarre, featuring a young reindeer, a squirrel and a weasel trying to save Santa’s Flying Forces … and Christmas. And the young reindeer wants to be an expert flyer like his father, who’s on the Force. Yeah, like I said.

Beginnings, Endings & Specials

The 12 Redneck Days of Christmas (CMT, 9:00 p.m./8:00 p.m. Central) -Tom Arnold hosts this look at the quirky Christmas traditions that permeate the trailer parks and countrysides of the midwest.

Best Year Ever (VH1, 9:00 p.m./8:00 p.m. Central) – Hosted by Paul F. Tompkins, this year-end variation on VH1’s popular Best Week Ever looks back at the year in pop culture and declares who had the “best year ever.” Nominees for the year include Cloris Leachman, Sarah Palin, Corey Worthington, Thomas Beattie, and David Cook.

The Family Entertainment Awards (The CW, 9:00 p.m./8:00 p.m. Central) – Hosted by Everybody Hates Chris star Tyler James Williams, the 10th annual ceremony honoring family friendly programming features appearances b Jennifer Love Hewitt, Blake Lively, Mario Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Leona Lewis and Michael Phelps’ mother. That’s right, he won’t be there but his mother will. He’s too big for The CW now, I guess.

Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns (CBS, 8:00 p.m./7:00 p.m. Central) – Well the second one pales in comparison to the incomparable original classic, but still they make for a nice diversion. And you can take a break to eat during Frosty Returns so you’re fresh for The Flight Before Christmas if you’ve lost your remote.

Greatest Holiday Moments: Songs of the Season Countdown (NBC, 8:00 p.m./7:00 p.m. Central) -This countdown of holiday music covers the old classics like Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” through the more modern classics like John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” right up through the modern era with the likes of Mariah Carey.

Maxim Hot 100 2008 (VH1, 10:00 p.m./9:00 p.m. Central) – A look at the 100 hottest women of 2008. Lots of scantily clad vixens. It’s Maxim. What’s not to love? This may be a repeat from earlier in the year, but I find I don’t care.

The Starter Wife (USA, 10:00 p.m./9:00 p.m. Central, 2nd Season Finale) – During Lou’s wedding, Molly thinks about her future with Zach while elsewhere more stuff happens to other people. It’s a season finale, you know how this stuff works. Angst and heartache and hugs and sappy music. Tune in, live it, love it.
