Is Lynette a pathological liar?

Sheesh, every time I think that Lynette is the perfect mom, she turns around and does something that makes me wonder where her head’s at.

On Sunday’s episode of Desperate Housewives, “Me and My Town,” Lynette did everything she could to manipulate the situation with Porter and his cougar-lover Anne Schilling. In the end, she paid Anne a big wad of cash, drove her to the bus station, and told her never to contact them again, not even when the baby arrives.

And guess what? “There’s no baby! Never was!” Anne says, though not quite so gleefully. Anyway, maybe Lynette’s instincts are good. She’s just being the mama bear protecting her son, right? Who knows what kind of hell Anne would have brought him down the line.

But what gets me is that later on, Lynette asked Porter point blank if he set that fire at the club, and he said no. Then, when he asked if she knew anything about Anne – since she hadn’t returned his phone calls – Lynette lied right to his face and said no. A lie is a lie, Lynette! Even if you’re trying to keep your son from running off to find his cougar-lover!

And to make matters worse, she also lied to the cops about what happened before the fire – that she never heard Porter say he wanted to kill Warren Schilling, even though that’s exactly what happened. Don’t you think someone else probably heard him say that? Don’t you think the cops are going to find out?

And don’t you think Lynette’s treading on thin ice here?! Don’t you really?! What is wrong with her?! She’s a pathological liar!

Sorry, but she’s doing what most mothers would do, protecting her son. The momma bear instinct runs very strong. I’m a mother of two so I should know. She was protecting Porter by not incriminating him with the police before she had a chance to ask Porter what happened. She was protecting Porter by not telling him the truth of the cougar’s departure. Porter would have tried to go after her if he knew the truth. My only point of disagreement with Lynette is that I’d have to think very hard about covering for Porter if he really had set the fire. Mothers also have a responsibility to teach their children that actions have consequences. Seven people died in that fire.
