Tonight on the tube: Ellen DeGeneres’ variety show on TBS

SYNDICATED

  • Not sure if it will be the start of a trend in the same way that Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was leading to more new series, but Legend of the Seeker is turning into a fun fantasy series. Don’t go in expecting any of the camp you got on Hercules and Xena as this fantasy takes itself completely serious. Don’t go in expecting a faithful adaptation of The Sword of Truth novel series either, but it’s still good episodic escapist adventure. Of course, check your local listings for times.

5:00p/4:00 Central

  • BBC America offers up the latest installment of their variation on American Gladiators. While Gladiators continues, NBC has not yet scheduled the return of AG so this may be your only place to get this kind of entertainment for awhile.

8:00p/7:00 Central

  • Before next week’s finale on CMT, the contestants of Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling must recap all the skills they’ve learned all season. ABC is going with Saturday Night College Football, though games will vary by region.
  • It’s repeats elsewhere as FOX repeats some Cops, while CBS brings a Numb3rs repeat where the team must track a serial killer replicating biblical deaths. NBC is going with the feature film Along Came Polly for the night.

9:00p/8:00 Central

  • 48 Hours Mystery is offering up a special two-hour episode tonight focusing on a teen hunted for murder. Only now the cops who helped put him away want to see him free.
  • I know it comes as a complete shocker, but FOX offers up a new America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back.
  • Tom Arnold and Candace Cameron Bure star in a Hallmark film about a father who’s fight to save his year-round Santaville attraction from financial trouble brings him closer to his daughter. Moonlight & Mistletoe sounds just so touching. I wonder if Uncle Jesse will be there?
  • Hey, you know how Rosie’s variety show flopped over on NBC. Well, Ellen DeGeneres is back with her second annual special on TBS, this year called Ellen’s Even Bigger Really Big Show. Personally, I think Ellen would have been a better choice for NBC than Rosie to try bringing this format back as she’s just a hell of a lot more likable.
  • Lifetime is airing the classic White Christmas, while Sci Fi is airing the slightly less classic Stephen King’s Desperation. Watch them both (picture-in-picture) and see if you can spot the similarities.

10:00p/9:00 Central.

  • The adult film stars of My Bare Lady on Fox Reality Channel are back at it trying to work at real jobs, while TBS follows up Ellen with the Funniest Movies of the Year: 2008. I wonder if any adult films will make the cut. Some of those are pretty damned funny. Have you seen some of those people try to act!
  • TLC is all new with Trading Spaces while BBC America brings a new The Graham Norton Show.
  • NBC wraps their night with a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit repeat. Tonight it’s the episode dealing with Martin Mull as a “voodoo” doctor screwing up AIDS paitents’ chances at survival. Then there’s a repeat of SNL with Anne Hathaway.

Totally agree re: Legend of the Seeker. I just caught up with the show and it’s very fun. I have no idea about the source material, but you gotta love a show where every problem is solved with a slo-mo swordfight. The special effects are surprisingly good. This and Merlin (the UK show) are both my new guilty pleasures.
