Chuck – Chuck Versus the Ex

NBC

NBC

(Season 2, Episode 6)

One of the hardest things to think about when watching this show is how Chuck is a Stanford guy who not only had his future taken away from him back then, but has had his whole life disrupted now, both because of Bryce Larkin. Chuck’s a nice guy and so far he is finishing dead last in almost every way. Even his poor sister is worried that he’s losing his drive and focus and squandering his potential completely.

Now that Chuck is more than just a guy working at the Buy More, he can’t even reveal any of that. And because of the Intersect, he can’t move on with his life and leave the Buy More. He’s not allowed a real relationship because he has to maintain this cover with Sarah, though I’m not sure why they must pretend to be involved for the cover to work. The bottom line is it sucks to be Chuck right about now and the government sure doesn’t seem to care at all. Hell, they plan to kill him as soon as they can replace him with a machine. Do you think that’s really an accurate representation of our government at work? Probably.

I like the idea of re-introducing Chuck’s ex, Jill, into the ongoing plots. It adds a new level of romantic tension with Sarah and allows Chuck a real chance at being happily involved with someone … at least for a little while. Considering she knows that he’s involved with the CIA, you just know this whole thing will end badly for both her and Chuck. But he might have some fun in the meantime.

The addition of Tony Hale to the Buy More staff as the new Assistant Manager brings some much needed accountability to the craziness that generally goes on there. I wonder how long before Casey and the government will have to do something about him. Big Mike is so oblivious, that it’s perfectly simple to have covert operations and bases right under his nose .. not so much Emmett (Hale).

I loved the extravagant lengths Casey and Sarah went to in order to help Chuck look good in front of his girlfriend. Too bad Jeff and Lester had to ride on by and blow it completely. The foursome of Jeff, Lester, Chuck and Morgan reminds me a lot of the classic foursome on The Big Bang Theory.

Of late, there’s been a real lack of connection between the four, with Chuck having almost no involvement at all with the happenings at the Buy More. This appears to still be going on, but the character of Emmett might help bring him more fully into the fold. Now that Chuck has his degree, will he try and get a better job? Will the government let him? Will Sarah strip down to very little again soon? How about Anna?

Woo woo! I’m glad you guys decided to review Chuck. It’s one of my favorites and I never miss it. This was a really good episode, although I too start to feel bad for Chuck as soon as he gets involved with a lady friend because we know it’s completely verboten and is going to end in a few episodes’ time. I’m loving the addition of Jordana Brewster as long as we have her anyway! Good God, I haven’t seen her in anything since The Faculty! Has she been MIA, or have I been out of the loop?

Is there hockey fan on the writing staff? Guy Lafleur is an hockey legend. What’s next? Chuck arresting Russian spy Alexei Kovalev?

When watching Chuck, we always have to keep in mind it is, at heart, a farce of a spy drama. It’s designed to be over-the-top spy silliness, so popular culture references like Guy LaFleur should be frequent. :)

I feel bad for Sarah … who I think really likes Chuck … but can’t do anything about it …

Thanks for adding Chuck to your reviews. It needs all the help it can get with its poor ratings and all. This is the most underappreciated show on television right now. If people would only give it a chance, I’m sure they would love it!
