The debates tonight happen when they happen, which means they start at 9:00p Eastern and 6:00p Pacific. So depending on where you are, your times may vary as some of these programs shuffle around the debate. Check local listings and never trust anything I say! And don’t expect such an intimate encounter from the two candidates as this picture indicates.

7:00p/6:00 Central

  • Tonight, on TLC’s Who Are You Wearing?, contestants vie for the chance to dress Holly Robinson Peete.

8:00p/7:00 Central

  • It’s all unscripted this hour. Let’s face it, nobody’s going to premiere their big new fall show opposite a presidential debate. But ABC will offer part one of Diane Sawyer’s interviews with candidates Barack Obama and John McCain on a special 20/20 .
  • Jeff Foxworthy reminds us how stupid America is on FOX’s Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? But if that’s too intellectually challenging, there’s always guys in their underwear hitting each other with folding chairs. The CW’s got you covered on that front with WWE SmackDown!
  • If the country and western world is more your style, you have two choices. NBC goes into the world of professional bull riding as the contestants of America’s Toughest Jobs saddle up for one of the world’s most dangerous jobs. Or you can watch the likes of Sebastian Bach and American Idol’s Mikalah Gordon vie for the chance to record a country album in the season finale of CMT’s Gone Country.
  • MyNetwork TV offers up a glimpse of the best in gymnastics with the special 2008 Tour of Gymnastics Superstars.

9:00p/8:00 Central

  • 90-minute coverage of the First Presidential Debate between Obama and McCain consume the big four as you can catch varying coverage on NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX.
  • Even BBC America is getting into the action as they offer a two-hour special edition of BBC World News America. Actually, I’ll bet they offer the best coverage of the whole situation.
  • But if you’ve had enough of politics, then you can just deal with the political commercials on other networks. The History Channel offers its continuing look at some of history’s most notorious mobsters with Gangland.
  • Stick with CMT, and you can see some of last season’s Gone Country favorites on Outsider’s Inn as Bobby Brown and Carnie Wilson continue trying to help Maureen McCormick run an inn. After this, check out the first of two Country Fried Home Videos, the first of which is the season finale. Make sense? It’s country fried, that’s why!
  • The finale of the story of Timothy Treadwill unfolds as Animal Planet’s Grizzly Man Diaries wraps. I’m not sure if there’s footage of his death at the hands of grizzly’s, but if there isn’t maybe they can re-enact it. The kids over at G4’s Attack of the Show have a great bear costume … and know how to use it!

10:00p/9:00 Central

  • If the season finale wasn’t enough home video action, tune into this Country Fried Home Videos: You Betcha special. Hell, them politicians is still yammering and I’d rather see good old boys playin’ with fireworks any day!
  • Or, if you were watching the debate, but got tired of the science fiction and fantasy promises they’re making, switch over to true Sci Fi for the latest installment of Stargate: Atlantis.
  • BBC America follows up their news coverage with more news. Newsnight features hard-hitting interviews with cool accents.
  • Because we all know we need more bride and wedding shows, TLC offers up a new Say Yes to the Dress. Or for even bigger disasters than most weddings, the History Channel offers up Shockwaves exploring massive natural disasters from first-person video captures.
  • ABC seems to be the only network scheduling a full-on analysis of the debates with ABC News Vote 2008: Presidential Debate Analysis. I guess FOX, CBS and NBC figure we’ll all understand their rhetoric completely.

11:00p/10:00 Central

  • Then, for the real analysis, count on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.
