30 Rock – Lots of awards, but will anyone watch?

NBC

Sunday was a big night for the folks over at 30 Rock. They were scooping up Emmy awards left and right, but what does that mean for the future of the show? It’s something that I find fascinating. Despite all the critical raves and the awards, nobody watches the show. Well, nobody in terms of a suitable audience for a big time show on one of the four big networks.

It puts NBC in an odd position. Really, any big network show with the numbers of 30 Rock would likely be cancelled, and it would be hard to argue against it. But having all of those Emmys carries some value. And who wants to be the person that cancelled the Best Comedy on television? Unfortunately, I don’t see another boatload of Emmys changing anything. The show has had enough of a run now that it has probably found its level.

The saving grace for the show might be that NBC is set to have plenty of other problems on the schedule very soon. After watching the pilot for the newly revamped Knight Rider, I don’t see it being any sort of a breakout. And if pre-season fan reaction to My Own Worst Enemy is any indication, Henry Spivey’s biggest enemy might not be Edward, but rather his complete lack of ratings. Enough such holes in the schedule may make all of those Emmy awards look just good enough to get 30 Rock through another oddly unwatched season.

I’ll be watching. Also, is it me or does it seem like in that picture of Tina Fey that her neck is hurting her a bit, as if it were sore from a long day of creating one of the most original and hilarious shows ever to air on network television? Well, let me be the first to step forward and say, Ms. Fey if you need a(n) (erotic) neck massage, I stand ready to assist you.

What was my point? I’m not sure. But people should be watching this show. The Federal Government seems to be doing everything these days, they should make it part of the bank bailout. $1 Trillion in aid, plus a mandatory viewing of 12 episodes of 30 Rock.

I talk to person after person who are obsessive fans of The Office and RARELY has one of them ever watched 30 Rock. I just don’t get it…how does a show featuring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan NOT seem appealing to fans of comedy? How do you watch The Office and NOT find out about 30 Rock? Just seems ridiculous to me. I don’t get it.
