House of Cards and more come to home video

Netflix revolutionized the world of television with its first original series, House of Cards. If you’re not a Netflix subscriber, you can now catch the show as it debuts on home video this week. HBO’s new season of The Newsroom is about to begin, and to support the launch they are releasing the first season on home video this week as well. And as the summer TV season begins on TNT and USA, you can catch up with the past seasons of many of their shows as well. On top of all that, the week of June 11 features many made-for-TV movies, animation for kids and adults, and classic TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray. Oz and Hansel & Gretel are new to home video June 11

While it wasn’t perfect — good beginning and end, saggy in the middle — Sam Raimi scored a big hit with Oz, the Great and Powerful, and if you missed it in theaters you can enjoy the film in the comfort of your living room this week. And if you have 3D capability, this is a movie that should be seen in all three dimensions. (Perhaps not so coincidentally, Warner Brothers is preparing a 75th anniversary re-release of The Wizard of Oz in IMAX 3D.) Staying on the 3D fantasy track, the under-performing but still enjoyable Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters also arrives on home video this week. If fantasy or 3D is not your bag, check out the action films — Snitch and Driven — the classics — Enter the Dragon — or the family films from Disney. Philly Comic Con 2013: The Good, the Bad and the Cosplay

Last year’s Philly Comic Con was so awesome and star-studded, I didn’t know where to look. In fact, with so many hot up and coming stars attending – Chris Hemsworth, The Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley, Stan Lee, The Five Captains, Torchwood, etc. I couldn’t cover them all. I considered expanding my Philly Comic Con coverage from Saturday-Sunday to Friday-Sunday. Because of last year’s astounding number of talent, I briefly wondered if Wizard World made any money and looked forward to seeing them top themselves this year. What are my final thoughts? Well … read on!

2011’s theme surrounded old school nostalgia with Burt Ward\Adam West and Billy Dee Williams. 2012 focused on hot, Hollywood glamour with the aforementioned talent. 2013 spotlighted local talent by featuring Philadelphia geek groups and nationally recognized cosplayers. Favoring restraint, it didn’t outdo last year. However, in terms of scheduling, the balance worked. Although I missed seeing multiple celebrities in the autograph booths and casually walking through the arena, this time I managed to catch all the celebrity AND comic panels that interested me AND had time to tour the celebrity booths that intrigued me. This year almost all the celebrities appeared occupied when I walked past. Even if you’re not press,  $85-95 price tag for 4 days to see, hear and question your favorite celeb, isn’t bad.

The Purge falls a little short of its execution and delivery

Sometimes movies come along that take me out of my comfort zone so much so that I’d like to purge them out of my consciousness. Universal Pictures’ The Purge is one that falls into that category. It’s not that it was especially creepy or even all that gory. I can deal with both of those things, and I’ve seen a lot worse. This movie disturbed me because of the concept. It’s certainly not something you see every day.

Apparently, the future United States sanctions the legality of all crimes once per year for a period of 12 hours known as the Purge. Anything illegal – even murder – suddenly becomes legal without any questions asked or any consequences invoked. Additionally, all emergency responders, including hospitals, the police and paramedics, are shut down during the night in question. If you happen to have an accident or medical crisis, I guess you’re left to your own devices until daylight breaks and help can arrive. The Kings of Summer is a charming, marvelous coming of age story

Movies have explored the concept of “coming of age” for a long time now, from the silly (Superbad) to the melodramatic (Moonrise Kingdom), but that makes a lot of sense, because most of us have either come of age or are still doing it. Most people can relate to the difficulty of relating to your parents and trying to be your own person. For guys, there’s the constant refrain of how you need to be “a man” and make something of yourself. It’s not easy for anyone, and nobody’s perfect at it, although some make it seem easier than others. Life can be difficult, even for teenagers who don’t need to worry about supporting their families or selves. Sometimes you just need to get away from it all.

The Internship is a by-the-numbers comedy

Nobody wants to feel useless. Nor do they want to be left behind as the world moves forward. But it’s not easy for everyone to keep up, especially with the rapid way things tend to change these days. Conversely, someone working towards ends they truly believe in tends to be a bit more fulfilled and happy with their life. But how often does that happen? And when it does, are there true, legitimate sacrifices to be considered? This movie addresses this concern briefly and then immediately discards it in pursuit of additional hijinks.

Philly Comic Con 2013: The Firefly panel kicks ass

Who needs Nathan Fillion? Although the Castle big wig cancelled a couple weeks ago, I barely missed him during the uproarious Firefly panel. I couldn’t stop enjoying the bawdy dialogue of Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite and Summer Glau. Seriously, who knew an entire cast playing a crew of off-kilter individuals, shared those same sensibilities? Jewel had the dirtiest mind, followed by Gina and, after Gina, Adam.
