Win passes to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in Baltimore or DC

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Ready for the second leg of Bilbo Baggins’ unexpected journey? You can see ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ before anyone else in Baltimore or DC. Find out how you could win passes!

This offer is now closed. Please follow @CliqueClack on Twitter for alerts on contests, news and reviews.

CliqueClack has partnered with Warner Brothers/New Line/MGM and Allied Integrated Marketing to offer readers in the Baltimore and DC areas a chance to attend an advance screening of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The film continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all — a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself — the Dragon Smaug.

The Hobbit Extended Edition provides some insights, yet even more to sit through

the-hobbit-dvd

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ wasn’t long enough for you? Well, there are two more films on the way. If you can’t wait for those, there’s a bit more this set can offer.

I’m not quite sure why I keep doing this to myself. Maybe it’s because I really, really want to love The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Maybe I just want to further understand why — oh, why — the beloved source material needs to extend to three movies instead of one. Whatever the reason, I’ve once again put myself through a viewing of the film, though this time it’s extended to, well, the extended version.

First let me note that I loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy, both the books and the movies. Admittedly, I know the movies took some liberties and strayed some from the books, but it’s safe to say the majority of Tolkien fans were pretty OK with that. For me, I was really OK with it, and in fact I was all over watching extended footage when it came out. Three books, covering three enormous books — of course there’s going to be extra stuff that may not have made it into the films. Totally understandable.

When the news came out that writer/director Peter Jackson was splitting The Hobbit into three films, I know I wasn’t alone in wondering “W in T ever-loving F is he doing?!” How can ONE book need three films to cover (and let’s not get into the appendices and The Silmarillion material — this movie series is called “The Hobbit,” so why is it anything more?). Yet Jackson is doing this in three movies, and on top of that he wasn’t given enough time to add all he wanted in the first film. I wouldn’t call myself a purist to the source material at all, but there’s a point where the liberties taken are just too freakin’ much.

What happens at a TV test screening?

TV_highquality

I was randomly selected to participate in a pilot test screening over the weekend. Here’s a behind the scenes look at what happens.

Each November, one of my (seemingly) eighty jobs finds me in Orlando for a little more than a week. Sometimes, I stick around for a day or two and visit one of the parks. Lately, the allure of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – and the nearing-completion expansion – has had the Universal Parks at the top of my list. This past Saturday I was walking around in shorts and a tee shirt a half day before I would fly back to the frozen tundra that is Virginia these days. That is how I found myself being approached by a representative from NBC/Universal about test screening a new TV pilot.

Since I do have a little background into how the TV pilot process works, it was quickly apparent what the guy had in mind. There were some pre-screening questions – I was a bit worried that CliqueClack would come up and I would be disqualified – and I was then directed to the test screening room. There were two offerings at the time, a sitcom and an hour-long drama. There was obviously some selection process to decide which I would be screening, but I wasn’t privy to how it worked. It was pretty early in the process, though – there was a difference in pay between the time commitments – and if I’d known they had slotted me for the sitcom I might have passed.
