Revisit a TV classic with I Love Lucy Live On Stage

LUCY 01

‘I Love Lucy’ has been on our TVs for more than 60 years, and now you can re-live the excitement of seeing the show in living color as ‘I Love Lucy Live On Stage’ tours the country.

Step back in time to 1950-something, to the beginning of the Golden Age of Television, step into the theater which is now a TV studio, specifically Desilu Studios and enjoy the “filming” of two episodes of the classic TV comedy I Love Lucy.

If you’re a fan of Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel, then you’ll want to make sure to snap up some tickets to the hit touring production I Love Lucy Live On Stage, now in its “second season.” This production is currently at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre through October 26. What can audiences expect from something that’s probably so familiar to so many? A really fun evening!

The show transports the audience back in time to Desilu Studios where two episode of I Love Lucy will be filmed back-to-back. While we’re watching the show, we’re actually participants as well, clapping when the Applause sign lights up, enjoying commercial breaks and all the busy-ness that goes on between set-ups, and even a “flubbed” line which has to be “re-shot.” It’s not as technical as a real TV shoot, but it is entertaining enough to make you feel like you’re really there with the cast and crew.

The Walking Dead is back

TWD s5e1 Nicotero rev

The excitement stirred by the return of ‘The Walking Dead’ is offset by too many coincidences, too much blood and guts and too few surprises. The good news is: There’s lots of promise to the new season.

Let’s get something out-of-the-way right now so there’s zero confusion.

Here’s what I’ll do: I’ll warn you with a “Ready? Here we go” when I’m moving on to the spoilers. Fair enough?

I saw “No Sanctuary” — the season 5 premiere of The Walking Dead — a week or so ago. Thrilled to get an advanced screening of it, I viewed it twice. I relished in it.

For Dead fans, it’s been a long haul since “A,” the season four closer that aired back on March 30th leaving us wondering the fate of the group corralled in that box car by the residents of Terminus. (And don’t tell me that was a spoiler — I can’t imagine anyone not being up to date on the series.)

So … here are several thoughts on “No Sanctuary.” Ready? Here we go …

Know what would have been nice? Had we lost a character of substance. (Not the nicest sentiment, I agree. But losing someone would have made the premiere infinitely more interesting.) Doing so would have shot a “no one is safe” reminder going into the new season.) Continue reading 'The Walking Dead is back' »

Valar Morghulis: the latest Game of Thrones beer from Ommegang Brewery

Brewery-Ommegang-Valar-Morghulis-Dubbel-Ale

If every man (or woman) is king (or queen) of their castle, they deserve a mighty ale to end their day, as they kick up their feet and survey their conquests. Is ‘Game of Thrones’’ new brew that drink?

Product tie-ins for television shows and movies are nothing new. From action figures to video games, apparel to novels, audiences are accustomed to searching Amazon – or your favorite brick and mortar stores if that’s what you are into – for items related to your favorite show. There has not been, however, a massive influx of branded adult beverages, even though there is a lot of opportunity for natural connections. One of the best examples of that – other than the inevitable Scandal-branded wine – is Game of Thrones and beer. Kill the Messenger exposes some ugly secrets of the United States

K72A7504.CR2

‘Kill the Messenger’ exposes some dirty secrets that may have gotten reporter Gary Webb killed. But was it murder or suicide?

The following is a guest post by Monique Mercer.

Kill the Messenger is a true story about a reporter, Gary Webb, who wanted that highly coveted big story that would rocket his small time local career to the big time. He got what he asked for. While working at the San Jose Mercury News, he receives a call from a woman Coral Bacca who asked him to meet her. She gave him classified documents that showed the US government was involved in bringing cocaine to our shores.

Her boyfriend Rafael Conejo, Ricky Ross, Donilo Blandon and Norwin Meneses were key players in trafficking cocaine in Los Angeles and other urban areas. While the government of the United States was publicly denouncing drugs and giving harsh jail sentences to offenders, they were secretly participating in the cover up of the massive crack cocaine epidemic and using this money to support the Nicaraguan Contra war.

Some stories are too true to tell especially when it involves the US Government.

Some stories are too true to tell especially when it involves the US Government, The CIA and National Security. Gary Webb didn’t see it that way. He was a thorough, insightful reporter who thought the American public should know the truth. He lined up all the key players; interviewed, documented and copied all the evidence he was presented. However, the government of the United States thinks its citizens can’t handle the truth. When our secrets are made public those people who expose the truth
are often scrutinized, badgered, publicly humiliated, discredited, and often times prosecuted as the scapegoat of government’s misdeeds.
