The 100 Season Two Preview: Notes from the Cast and Crew

The 100 was probably my favorite new show when I reviewed the 2013 pilots last summer. Nothing could have prepared me, however, for what was to come when the series got to Episode 3 (Or Episode 4 … or Episode 5; at some point I had to stop counting). Jason Rothenberg and his team are right up there with Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal in terms of telling a fast-paced, dark story that is less like a television show and more like — if you’ll forgive the cliche — a roller coaster ride (and a damn fine coaster, too. Not one of those kiddy-coasters, but one you lose your lunch just looking at from the bottom).

We sat down with the cast and crew at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer. They told us what they could about the upcoming season, which was unsurprisingly very little. Isaiah Washington was particularly obtuse (tongue-in-cheek … to an extent). If you had asked me this summer, I would have said that just by his appearance at the Con one could figure out his fate … but then I’m reminded of our conversation with Mark Guggenheim about how many episodes Caity Loitz was going to be in, and I start to hedge those bets. 2 Broke Girls, Dracula, Penny Dreadful and more come to home video

There was a mixed bag of TV releases on DVD and Blu-ray this week with past seasons of shows soon to return — 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men — and shows that recently ended and are either returning next year — Penny Dreadful, Fargo — or have ended their runs — Dracula, The Honorable Woman. Reality TV is featured heavily this week with either season sets or special episodes, including Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Alaska State Troopers, Jackass and Pawn Stars, and shows the entire family can enjoy — Mr. Peabody and Sherman (the classic cartoons to tie in with the movie release), Marvel Knights, Star Wars Rebels and Yo Gabba Gabba. St. Vincent isn’t the next great Bill Murray movie, but it’s far from the worst

Ah, youth, where has it gone? Or conversely, ah, old age, why is it already here? The pairing and juxtaposition between young and old is a classic one, but there’s good reason for that. Sure, Dennis the Menace lets us indulge in our innocence and mischief while being glad Mr. Wilson, the adult, is around to pay attention. Having a kid and an older person play off each other highlights differences and similarities. People always have something to learn, especially from each other, and life isn’t over just because you’re old.

Sometimes (often) such movies are cliched or stupid, but they don’t have to be. The themes make sense, because they are universal. Everyone starts as a kid, and everyone grows old. There’s that parallel again, hinting its way at us with blunt unsubtle force. So in the end, it just comes down to the characters, and whether or not they’re worth watching at all.

Whiplash is a frenetic, fabulous movie about the line between mentorship and abuse

There is a thin line between a caring teacher who’s pushing you as hard as you can go to achieve greatness and a giant jerk on a power trip. Teaching is difficult, and teaching the truly talented is not as easy as it sounds. Many coast on by, letting the students do all the work. But it’s thought often that you really need to push and push to achieve greatness; if you aren’t struggling, can you truly obtain anything more than mediocrity in a sea of the same?

Should cable providers start shaking in their boots?

Wednesday, October 15 was a momentous day for digital media. With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime giving networks a place for past episodes (and in some cases, new episodes day after air) of their series to live on and gain new viewers, there was a seismic shift that was felt throughout the lands of Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner and other cable providers when HBO announced it would launch its own stand-alone streaming service in 2015.

HBO currently provides HBO GO for cable subscribers which includes a library of movies, and complete series both new and old, including Game of Thrones, Veep, The Sopranos, Girls, The Wire and more. Amazon Instant members also have access to HBO programs, but only past seasons (current seasons will take up to three years to land on Amazon). The new streaming service will not require a cable subscription and will include basically the same content as cable subscribers get with HBO GO (sister channel Cinemax content may also be included). It’s rumored Showtime will follow suit at some point in the near future.
