Kevin Chapman is the gentleman’s gentleman @ NYCC 2012

GEDC0148

Kevin Chapman might call himself “a Coke machine with a head on it,” but he’s all heart. In the New York Comic Con press room, he joked with the guys, watched out for the ladies and he utterly supported his co-stars. Kevin Chapman is definitely one to watch out for in ‘Person of Interest.’

What you see is what you get with Kevin Chapman. Kevin’s a straight up Boston guy and sounds like a New York cop by way of Massachusetts. Considering he has three cops in the family and did ride-alongs in Baltimore, Boston, and LA in his past career, it explains why I find Fusco so believable. He’s definitely a fan of the work and remembers everything about his character, down to the episode. He’s aware of his character’s shortcomings (and his own), but views his character as a good cop who got lost along the way. As a person, he’s also solicitous. Most of the people at my table managed to throw out questions save the other female blogger at our table who fell silent when he appeared. Before the PR people moved him to the next table, he asked if she had any questions to throw his way. Was that a Fusco move? Probably not. But that was a genuine Kevin Chapman move all the way. You can tell Kevin loves his job (and co-workers). Come on, check out that glance he threw to his co-star as she shook her money-maker for the appreciative press room. Clearly, he loves what he does. If you want to hear about Fusco’s relationship with Carter and if we’ll ever see him inside the secret lair, listen to the clip!

Talking with Person of Interest’s Michael Emerson @ NYCC 2012

Michael Emerson is the most impeccably dressed, gently spoken man possible. He dresses like Finch in ‘Person of Interest.’ He rocks glasses like Finch. And, he’s intelligent like Finch. But, is he Finch? That’s for him to know and us to decide.

What did I learn about Michael Emerson? Michael was incredibly quiet, introspective and impeccably well dressed. In his glasses, well matched three-piece suit and highly thoughtful comments I could see where he pulled parts of himself into the Finch character. The one thing I loved about him — which I didn’t expect — was his awareness of the writing staff’s patterns, particularly when it comes to the female characters. One of my pet peeves surrounds shows that focus on the looks of its actresses over making their character believable. But, Person of Interest doesn’t pretend that a working mother would rock 3-inch heels, a mini-skirt and chunky jewelry to work. However, I’m surprised and impressed that Emerson, as a male actor, noticed and appreciates what makes Person of Interest different gender-wise.

Jonah Nolan speaks softly at the Person of Interest Press Room @ NYCC 2012

GEDC0160

Jonah Nolan might have had a hoarse voice at the ‘Person of Interest’ press room, but he talked about his tech background, why he’ll never film in New Jersey, and where they filmed the season premiere.

I learned that Jonah took programming classes in college and ran websites, which explains his tech attraction and background knowledge on the show. Honestly, I just wanted to talk to him tech-to-tech. He loved Man on Fire with Denzel Washington and feels it influenced him with Person of Interest. I also learned that he has a sense of humor. He dropped hints about the show where Long Island doubled as Texas and joked that a number will never appear in NJ because they don’t have a tax credit program. He’s clearly an old hat at this. When a journalist/blogger/writer *cough* me *cough* asked him a question that went counter to his original intention, he just complimented the person on the thought. You might have to increase the sound for this clip due to Jonah’s voice. You can tell that Jonah is the writer who spends more of his time behind his laptop and less talking to crowds of people. When I first started performing at ren faires, I used to lose my voice at the end of the weekend because I ran around shouting at hundreds of people for 12 hours a day. Then, I realized I didn’t need to blow out my vocal chords and started doing more vocal exercises. So, you’ll notice that Jonah, after a day of interviews and autograph signings, sounds slightly more hoarse than the rest of his cast. So pump up the volume so you can hear his words of wisdom!

Fringe throws another curve ball at the fans

Etta Fringe Bullet that Saved the World

‘Fringe’ has gotten very good at changing directions during the first four and a half seasons of its run. Sometimes you see the curve balls coming, but others — like tonight — it seemingly comes out of nowhere.

I don’t normally bother with spoiler warnings, because I’m one of those people who thinks that you should be visiting a television and pop culture commentary site if you’re avoiding spoilers for a particular show. But in this case, I’m going to make an exception. If you’ve not watched this weeks Fringe, you should move on now.

No, seriously … don’t keep reading; you’re not going to be happy with me.

Seriously, don’t keep reading if you’ve not watched this episode.

Masquerade – Moving and lavish costume drama

masqu

‘Masquerade’ is a fascinating and enjoyable look at a king of an early Korean dynasty and the jester who looks just like him.

In the 16th century, Prince Gwang-hae became king of the Joseon Dynasty (an important historical Korean state). He faced war throughout the region and was later deposed, despite his best efforts. In the official court chronicles, there are two weeks missing during his eighth year as king — Masquerade tells a fictional tale of what might have happened.

As we begin to look into the royal court, we see Gwang-hae (Lee Byung-hun from GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra) — not a very popular ruler — constantly worried about being assassinated. At the same time, Ha-sun, a local jester who is eerily similar looking to the king (also Lee Byung-hun, of course) is arrested for making fun of the king. The king finds this identical-faced person intriguing, but it doesn’t quite get into Prince and the Pauper territory, as the king falls into a coma after being poisoned (apparently he was right to be paranoid). Naturally, the king’s close adviser and the Chief Eunuch bring Ha-Sun in to be pretender to be the throne until Gwang-hae wakes up.

What the Person of Interest press room interviews and recent episodes taught me

Person of Interest NYCC Cast Photo

What did I learn from my ‘Person of Interest’ press room interviews? I learned that Michael Emerson is a dapper dresser, Kevin Chapman is the real deal, all men love Taraji P. Henson, Jonah Nolan is as soft spoken as his lead and Amy Acker is adorable.

I learned a lot from the Person of Interest press room interviews about the actors and how they view their characters. Michael Emerson is as intriguing as Mr. Finch. Kevin Chapman loves Fusco’s failed hero ambiguity. While Taraji P. Henson loves her character, she wouldn’t mind if Carter rocked a tight-fitting dress every now and again. And Amy Acker is the mischievous sprite we all expected.

It was nice talking to actors and writers that I always respected. I’m surprised you don’t hear me hyperventilating geek-girliness in the audio clips. I never expected in a million years I’d sit across from Amy Acker. But, after talking to Jonah Nolan and Michael Emerson, I realized that the Person of Interest staff greatly respect intelligent women and enjoy casting strong actresses in the lead roles. So, for my overall thoughts on the Person of Interest interviews, additional press room photos, and mini-reviews of the most recent episodes, come on in!

Allison Janney tackles a tough subject in WIGS short Celia

Allison Janney WIGS

The ‘West Wing’ star addresses women’s rights in the new web-only short, and talks about her interest in projects with purpose.

As White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on NBC’s The West Wing, actress Allison Janney played a very strong woman. Today, in the new web drama Celia, she’s a doctor dealing with a situation that would challenge even the strongest lady.

Part of the WIGS line of YouTube original programming, Celia sees the title character (Janney) surprised when her friend’s teenage daughter Hannah (Dakota Fanning, The Twilight Saga, Steven Spielberg’s Taken) appears in her exam room and says that she’s seeking an abortion. What’s more, Hannah hasn’t told the father of the child or her own mother – a longtime friend of Celia’s – about her intention to terminate the pregnancy. Celia must decide how to advise Hannah, and if she informs the seventeen-year-old’s parents about their daughter’s situation.

Confronting the ghosts of Halloweens past

wonka

If you watched the Halloween episode of ‘Modern Family’ and thought Lily was adorable as Tattoo from ‘Fantasy Island,’ I’m here to tell you that’s what the world needs more of – people who put together their own creative costumes! As a longtime fan of pop culture-inspired Halloween costumes, I decided to confront some of the ghosts of my Halloweens past in preparation for the main event next week.

Every morning as I peruse the contents of my walk-in closet to pick out a suitable outfit for my day, I find myself face-to-face with many of my ghosts of Halloween pasts. Not actual ghosts — although that would make for an interesting topic. I’m talking about remnants of creative pop culture-inspired Halloween costumes I’ve worn in years past.

I’m talking about remnants of creative pop culture-inspired Halloween costumes I’ve worn in years past.

One pop of your head into the closet and you can’t help but miss my giant California Raisins costume from last year, along with the pair of white Mickey Mouse gloves and the saxophone I carried around with it. There’s the suit jacket, bloody airplane propeller (constructed out of styrofoam and a headband) and blood-soaked guitar from when I thought it would be clever to be Bloody Holly, Buddy Holly’s post-plane crash zombie.

What is Cloud Atlas?

Cloud-Atlas-Hanks-Berry

‘Cloud Atlas’ is not a film that can be easily reviewed, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing.

Once in a great while, there comes a movie that defies description. Sometimes that’s a good thing, and sometimes it’s a bad thing. In the case of Cloud Atlas, it’s not only a good thing but an extraordinarily good thing. That’s not to say that the movie will be something everyone will enjoy, but anyone who really appreciates audacious film-making should appreciate every single moment in the film.

The problem with the movie, though, is that it really is unreviewable. But again, that’s a really good thing in this case because there is so much going on during the film’s nearly three hour running time that it would be impossible to boil it all down to a few paragraphs. Cloud Atlas is a movie that must be talked about after seeing it. Too many movies (pretty much anything that comes out of the Hollywood studio machine) are enjoyed in the moment and mostly forgotten almost by the time you’ve walked back to your car. Cloud Atlas definitely is not one of those films.
