The 100 finds mystery babies and rebellious youth

Jason Rothenberg and the rest of The 100’s production team spent the entire summer dancing around questions about the fate of the myriad characters last season’s finale left in significant danger. Isaiah Washington, who plays Chancellor Jaha, was even more dodgy (remember the beginning of this video?). Last week’s premiere cleared up the disposition of Bellamy, Finn and Raven – to an extent – but this week covered the last man in space.

Unfortunately, I found the Jaha storyline to be a rare misstep by the writing team. It was obvious early on that the infant was a hallucination brought on by oxygen deprivation. Hell, even in the final scene last week Wells’ picture was up on his father’s monitor as we first heard the baby’s cries. It was a weak way to move Jaha beyond his “the captain goes down with the ship” mentality, and motivate him to finding a way to get down to the planet. Ouija is fun but not very scary

Over the past few years, we’ve seen movies based on toys and games, most notably the Transformers series and Battleship. There are movies in the works based on the classic board games Monopoly and Candyland as well. Just in time for Halloween, the newest game-to-movie production debuts as Ouija comes to the big screen.

Depending on your personal beliefs, the Ouija board is either just a game or a tool of the Devil used to open a portal to a demonic world. The movie capitalizes on these beliefs that playing with a Ouija board will only lead to bad things.

In Ouija, we meet two best friends as children playing with a Ouija board. As teenagers, one of the girls, Debbie, disobeys the cardinal rule of not playing with the board alone. Next thing you know, Debbie hangs herself but no one can believe that she actually killed herself. Her friend Laine (Bates Motel‘s Olivia Cooke) thinks the only way to get closure is to gather Debbie’s closest friends and contact her with the Ouija board. Contact is made, but is it Debbie or something pretending to be Debbie?

1931’s Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde is startling, distressing stuff

As a kid, I had nothing but love for old monster movies.

The Universal gang, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Creature From The Black Lagoon. The cheesecake gigantic atomic monstrosities. War Of The Gargantuas. Godzilla and his kaiju clan.

I collected and built all the Aurora horror model kits. (Not the Polar Lights remakes, the original, one and only Aurora kits with their glow-in-the-dark features and meticulous need for attention.) I still have all of them.

And I reveled in the bevy of publications of my youth, from comics (Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing, Monsters Unleashed) to black and white magazines (Famous Monsters Of Filmland) and right on into the “vogue” newspapers (The Monster Times).

Interestingly, of all the films and media I devoured back in the day — something I continue soak up and revisit as time allows — I never got around to reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde nor did I get any of the many films tucked beneath my belt. I really don’t have a good reason. It just might be it was one of the lesser films I figured I’d get to eventually. In hindsight I don’t remember it being as readily viewable as other horror flicks, a reasonable excuse I’m comfortable in stating that’s the most likely cause.

Regardless, I recently was able to wrangle a viewing of Fredric March’s Oscar-winning performance during a rather recent Turner Classic Movie pre-code Friday night.

The 100 season premiere reminds us how crazy this show is

Previously on The 100: What. The. Fudge. Critics can talk about Scandal, they can talk about The Walking Dead, or they can talk about a host of other much-hyped shows that provides shocking twists and turns, but for my money, The 100 has them all beat.

I was describing the show to a friend this summer, trying to explain how the show kept ramping up the action. I told her there was a big shocking moment at the end of the pilot that left audiences jaw-dropped. Then Clarke topped it at the end of episode two. Then Charlotte topped it once and then once again in the following episodes. There’s nothing like The 100 on television anywhere, and I’m damn glad the show is back.

I talked to the cast and crew at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, and I was particularly struck by something showrunner Jason Rothenberg said. The full quote is in the video below, but he basically didn’t think that the show deserved its reputation for killing off characters; other than Wells, none of the characters killed was portrayed as a regular character. Rothenberg implied that since the show received that reputation, they were going to attempt to live up to it in season two. Boys and girls, if that statement does not scare you, you are not paying close enough attention. There’s an influx of characters on the ground with the return of the Ark, the Mountain Men (People?) and more Grounders.
