Remembering Larry Hagman

Larry Hagman

TV icon Larry Hagman has passed away, leaving fans with two indelible characters and decades of entertainment to his credit. How will you best remember Larry Hagman?

Black Friday 2012 really lived up to the name when news broke of the passing of TV icon Larry Hagman. A wave of sadness passed over me as another of our true TV icons has left us with a void that can’t be filled. I grew up watching Mr. Hagman in his two signature roles: Major Anthony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie and J.R. Ewing on Dallas. Over the years, Hagman has made appearances in other TV shows and movies but those two roles defined the man for generations of TV viewers, and thanks to the success of the Dallas reboot on TNT, a new generation was getting a chance to see the great Larry Hagman bring the nefarious J.R. Ewing back to life.

Confrontation comes a’knocking on The Walking Dead

Merle TWD

The penultimate episode of the first half of the season sets a terrific stage for the mid-season finale.

Now … that’s what I’m talking about.

An episode that’s got it all, soup to nuts. Merle back to his old asshat self. (“I’ll bake a cake … with pink frosting. Would they like that?”) Rick out of his funk. The group on high alert. The knowing music as it builds toward the end of the episode.

When the writers can do this and evoke tears — from me! — it trips my trigger.

And, of course, my favorite part of the show: the character interaction. If you don’t know I harp on this week after week after week, you’re pretty much glossing over what I write about The Walking Dead. This time it was the reveal Carol was still with them, followed by Rick and her knowing and sudden tears at the fact Lori was gone, Carol empathizing with him silently. It doesn’t get much better than that for me. No words need be spoken and yet volumes are exchanged. When the writers can do this and evoke tears — from me! — it trips my trigger. (Second favorite moment? Wondering if there was going to be anything different at Mr. Coleman’s resurrection. I loved that suspense, even when the expected result reared its head.)

I love Comic Book Men … more specifically, its podcast

comic-book-men

How could a show about some guys running a New Jersey comic book shop be one of the highlights of my TV viewing week? By the mastery of Kevin Smith.

When the pilot for Comic Book Men went circulating around, I wasn’t one to jump at it, I’ll admit. I knew it involved Kevin Smith, whom I’m a fan of, but from the outside it seemed he’d be completely off-screen and uninvolved except for via the credits. It didn’t help that Clacker Michael didn’t give the pilot much praise, either — a guy who’s a seasoned veteran of the San Diego Comic-Con and has had deep conversations with some well-known — and not-so-well-known — comic book artists both in and outside SDCC. He helped break several Clacker SDCC cherries.

Now, with Comic Book Men deep into its second season, I’m coming out to admit I’m a fan. Not with the show, necessarily, but with the accompanying podcast … but not, necessarily, Kevin Smith’s SModcast.

Hostess – What went wrong?

file000943219960

It wasn’t the Baker’s Union that killed Hostess, so, what went wrong with our favorite snack cake maker? Was it greed? Was it unsatisfied workers? Or was it an uncaring American public? What is Twinkie’s defense?

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the possible disbandment of an American brand that managed survived for 80 years through world wars and bomb fears. Although I doubt the Baker’s Union caused the downfall of a company undergoing multiple fractures in the past seven-ten years, which particular issue catalyzed the company’s downfall or was it multiple items simultaneously?

Was it worker dissatisfaction?

Was it a poor work environment?

Was it a poor work environment that contributed to the company’s downfall? Hostess brands recommended a 17% cut in health benefits, a decrease of its $100 million annual pension balance obligation, a worker pay cut by 8%, and raised worker healthcare costs by 20%. But worker dissatisfaction didn’t start recently. Looking at Glassdoor.com, Hostess had negative worker reactions that increased four-five weeks ago. In as far back as February and April 2012 — and most recently in August and September, workers complained about cut wages, lost benefits and overpaid management who didn’t understand the business. None of the reviews are 100% positive, but they grew increasingly negative as they shifted towards September. In April 30, 2012, a Gulfport, MS employee wrote “The company is in financial turmoil, upper management is clueless, lies are abundant and the employee is not valued.” Five weeks ago a WI employee wrote “lots of hours, first start out 70 ours a week.” Four weeks ago another worker typed, “It was a good job before they took nearly 1/4th of the salary away.” Heck, there are concerned posts in October 2010 with titles, “Struggling to Gain Traction” and “We need to go back 30 years.”
